Bought our first place in 1980. For 24,000. Now worth at least 250,000. We still own it. It is a rental. Bought our second place for 72,000, now worth 300,000.

Both autos and real estate, if you buy it right, and sell it at the right time, with a little bit of luck thrown in, you can at a minimum break even. My last 4 vehicles over the past 10 years didn't cost me a dime. Maintenance costs, but I sold every one for what I paid or more. None were rare, I just got great deals when I bought them.

34 to 295 in that time is a 5.9% rate. Not bad compared to a lot of places you can put money, I guess. But when you consider everything else that goes into the house, like maintenance and time it may not be as sweet. That said, you have to live somewhere, so having it gain some value is better than nothing.

On the vehicles: things like DEF and EGR cause well known problems with a diesel motor, and even without them they run very clean. Also, some people use a pickup in a manner where having a 1200 degree torpedo inches off the ground isn't practical.

I do things that let me use my pickup the way I want. Do I need a wireless phone charger or Bluetooth head unit? Nope. But I like having them. Girlfriend LOVES the wireless charger. In my opinion, if you will use it and it's affordable, go for it.
