Southern Silverado Guy 85, So what it roll coal? That is term that I have never heard of.

It's done with diesels. It's a current fad. But, you know how when you see a diesel blow black smoke when the throttle is floored. I don't think new diesels do it I don't think or it's think black if they do. But, you mainly see it with commercial trucks. Well rolling coal is making the engine blow that thick black smoke all the time no matter how much throttle they give it. I don't know exactly what's done, but I think it's just a tune where it dumps more fuel than is needed so they're literally blowing money out of the tailpipe because it's unburnt fuel. It does absolutely nothing for performance. They do it because they think it's cool to do.

Oh that explains it. No, the new diesels don't do that. At least mine doesn't do it. Now the local school buses...that is a different matter altogether. I know that my son took off/disconnected his Def system that scrubs the diesel exhaust much like a catalytic converter does for a gasoline engine. Well that ended up costing him some major money because he had to pay for the repairs and I think that he had to get his engine reprogramed. Not 100% sure all what he had to do to fix it so that it would pass smog. All I know is that he was doing a lot of whining about how much of a hassle it was and how much it cost him to get it fixed. Don't think that he will be doing that again soon. And no he is not allowed to even drive my new truck.

It's done with new too, after deleting and add a tune. That's why I'll stay with gas trucks.

come on dudes I KNOW you want that gentlemens GM Borla CatBack Dual exhaust system. Git up off dat wallet and git u one...tight wads

this is nice.

After years of carbs and TBI, needing to be modded daily..

it seems the last thing left is tires and exhaust. I don't mess with much for vehicles 20 years old onward to today.

my locale and mufflers..terrible. The big flowmaster is a good item. Borla is just that: borla. A lot of money.

I play with stainless if I am making it. My subaru is now 304, had to. Saved tons of money doing it myself.

The only things that I would do (once it's paid for) is upgrade the headlights on my GMC Sierra, and maybe a performance tune for better throttle response, but that would be it. I would not throw big $$$ at a depreciating value.

Sorry but I never understood the viewing of vehicle purchases as an investment. Exotic/rare things aside, they're not. I spend tons of time behind the wheel, as I'm sure many others here do. If I can do something to make my experience better, I will. I get the reluctance to do something major like a tune because of the potential warranty hassles but a level kit or upgraded lights, why not, assuming it won't be a financial burden? GM makes a good truck, as do the rest of the manufacturers (no matter how much most of us don't like admitting that haha). But they're not perfect. They have to design everything to meet strict longevity targets, ride quality and make it idiot proof as possible. I've put exhausts on every vehicle I've owned and see no reason to stop.

I'll probably be trading in the Jeep for a pickup next spring. Thankfully on direct trade in I'll come out quite nicely since Wranglers have some of the best retained value on the market but I'm sure I'll take a beating on selling off the bumpers, lights and other bits I tossed on to make the Jeep better for me. Whatever, they served their purpose for my time with it and whatever I can get for the mods will just get flipped to buy cool stuff for whatever comes next.

I don't keep vehicles for long so for me, the money is most certainly a waste from any analytical point of view but there are plenty of folks here who keep stuff for a long time- is that mod money really a waste then?

I would upgrade the headlights because, as many know, the 14 /15 GMC Sierra have the worst headlamps on the market, so I'll do it for safety. The Tune is strictly for a better throttle response, also a safety issue as there have been many a time I needed to get up and go, and it fell on it's face.....all this will be done once I buy it out from the Lease, and no warranty issues to worry about. If I think about all the $$$ I spent on wheels, tires, exhaust, and engine builds on my past vehicles over the years instead of leaving things be, and instead, put the $$$ in some sort of investment (IRA...anything) :banghead:

Im sure your kidding about homes. I have 4 rentals that are paid for, and provide a good return. I quit 401s after the 08 disaster. The last classic car I had provided me a 4K profit after 4 years of ownership. Overall I don't look at my car toys as an investment, gota have some fun. But I still don't do to bad.

Yup. Autos and Homes should never be purchased thinking that they are investments.

We buy a vehicle and modify it simply because we like what we like, and what we like isnt really offered. You see a lot of it on these boards because ppl who buy it to just drive it as is, typically dont have reason to be here. A large driver of a forum like this is the sharing if information about mods and repairs.

Yeah the rolling Coal bit is behond me too, that's a real lack of consideration for the next generation. But to get back to the subject I like moding and making my truck mine. Little things that make it look different in a tasteful way. Like painting that wart on the roof they call satellite antenna body colour so it just kinda disappear..
