Any good DIY mods out there?

Recommended Posts

I didn't see any threads out there, but was wanting to see what people have done as far as DIY mods to their trucks.

Ladder racks, cargo management, etc

It's always fun to do some modding for free or relatively cheap.

I think a lot of people install their own lift kits and auxiliary lights. But since I actually use my truck to do work, I'm also more interested if anyone has done anything for cargo management.

I have done 3 simple things to mine:

1) cut a treated 2x4 to fit across the bed in the slots to hold my sand bags in winter.

2) install 6 of these retractable hooks on the inside of the bed http://www.bullringusa.com/shop/retractable-tie-down-chevy-bullet/

3) install an undercover swing case http://www.undercoverinfo.com/products/swingcase

I look forward to seeing what other creative people have come up with.

This is the best cargo management I found.

16$ at walmart and it fits perfectly behind rear wheel well and tailgate. Can be easily strapped in using the existing loop and matches pretty well with box liner. Waterproof and latches closed tight. Can be locked with a padlock but is just plastic/pvc so not the most secure storage.

This is a good point many people do not realize there is slots in the factory bed specifically sized for a length of 2×4 for this very reason. Its why there is no divider as a option like some trucks. GM been doing this for like 30 years. Fun Fact if you look at the top of the wheel well it is flat and fits a 2x6 perfectly laying flat and also if you look to front and back you will see there are also horizontal slots to allow you to place boards and then a length of plywood to create a flat surface atop the wheel wells this is for hualing wider cargo that still needs to lay flat and creates a storage bay underneath.

I think I might make a few of those undercover swing bases out of some 3/4" ply that will fit over the wheel well. should be relatively easy to make. i just need something flexible enough to cover the bottom curve.

I have done the bed 2x4 divider, added a 12k winch, tailgate lock, headache rack, etc.

One thing that has served me very well is a cable (1/4") attached to the front and rear corner tie downs. Gives me unlimited tiedowns front to rear without any drilling.

I also slipped a hose clamp over the slotted side of the tailgate hinge to help reduce theft...while not foolproof by any means, it prevents someone from stealing it in 30 seconds without the clamp.

I've never thought tailgate theft was a thing. Thanks for the idea
