MavFlyBy
Hey everyone, Which of these supercharging systems is a better setup for the 2000 5.3L Silverado? Will be used for towing and on the track (I'd like to see mid 13s 1/4 mile). Also what cams would work best with the supercharger? Thanks
gandolphxx
The new Magnacharger comes with an intercooler which should work nicely [not sure about a 2000] - I think 13's are going to be a stretch though.
dcairns
Got 13.92 out of my SS. Should not be a problem for a reg cab 5.3. Not sure how it would shake out for an ext cab 5.3.
remberto
when i read this: http://media.gm.com/news/releases/011029_sierra.html "The Sierra Pro Plus also delivers more than expected under the hood, with a Magnuson supercharged engine package from GM Performance Parts. The supercharger, currently under consideration for future production, boosts maximum horsepower of the Vortec 6000 V8 engine by 20 percent, to 328, and maximum torque by 23 percent, to 356 lb-ft." the obvious thought was that GM at some point considered this product for production which i thought was impressive. but i tend to research performance without sacrificing reliability. you're looking to compare brands. obviously dyno results for your truck of every manuf. charted on the same dyno plot would be heaven. i can't find that but am reviewing this document from superchargersonline.com. --
americanmuscleman
A whipplecharger is going to add power to your whole powerband as it creates boost at low rpm to higher rpm. A centrifugal supercharger will only add power at higher rpm, but it will usually add more than a lyshom or roots style supercharger at that higher rpm. This makes a centrifugal supercharger ideal for racing, and a lyshom and roots style typically better for lower rpm and mid-range torque and horsepower. Intercoolers and aftercoolers are always a good idea. You'll make more power because of the cooler air, and its better for your engine. An awesome cam for a 5.3L would be an 01' or 02'/03' Z06 cam. Nice smooth idle, but has a nice amount of torque and a lot of top end power. It should work well with a supercharger too. Another thing you might look into is porting your heads. The 5.3L's have an awesome head design to start with, but ported 5.3L heads flow incredibly. A 5.3L with an 02'/03' Z06 cam and TEA ported 5.3L heads can make some awesome power without a supercharger and remain ductile around town, and get good gas mileage, etc.. but still make a load of power. I think Truckin' had a tech article or answer to a reader mail question about heads and they mentioned using the 6.0 heads. Might be worth researching...
