Semi off topic, why doesn't every GM truck with a tow package just come with the brake controller? Seems silly to me.

There's the real question!

Because not every person tows something that needs or uses a trailer that has brakes on it. I've used my hitch several times, not once have I used it with anything that has a trailer brake on it. I didn't want the TBC on my new truck but was left with little options due to how the process on getting this truck was done via GM. The factory controller is $250, I would have rather saved that money to be honest.

I understand your point, but if you're buying a truck w/ the max tow package, I think it would have made sense to just include it in the package. As they're built, any GM twin can tow light duty trailers, but the ASSUMPTION would be that if you order the max tow package, wouldn't you be planning to tow something that would include electric brakes? Why not include the controller in that package? Or am I all wet?

Not every truck has the max tow package on it, mine doesn't. The reply some made earlier was if GM puts a trailer package on the trucks why not put the TBC on as well, my answer was because not everyone will tow something that has brakes on the trailer.

If cost doesn't matter trade the truck in for one with the equipment you want, it's probably not going to be much more costly than having someone hack your truck up over a brake controller.

I would trade it in but I like my 2016 sierra 1500 denali 2wd 6.2 cocoa interior and I looked at the 2017 and didn't like that they changed the cocoa interior so I'm left with one option to pay a lot to get it reprogrammed

My truck came with the controller. I don't tow anything and don't have any plans to do so. I bought a replacement bezel with the little cubby hole storage. I am going to take off the controller and put it away for the next guy.

Man that service trailer brake message would drive me crazy for the sake of a cubby lol

Actually, I left the switch wired up to avoid just what you described. It's tied up behind the bezel.
