In all honesty, How does your wife react when..

Honey I want to buy rims. Replicas and tires are an awesome deal around 1700-1900

My wife. Ok honey if you would rather spend that on your truck then your daughter then it's ok with me :(

^this is accurate.

the key is spending reasonably. you aren't going to get a very good reaction dropping 2 grand at a time. But a few hundred here and there is fine with my wife. She just wants me to explain why it is necessary and make sure I shop around for the best price. Its amazing how much automotive stuff is on Amazon now. No more Summit catalog for me!

I think this is a little removed from the type of topics this forum discusses and should take place on another site. I understand the issue, having been married for 40 yrs but I look here to learn about my truck, not my marriage.

Donstar this post is in the lounge in the off topic area I believe this is an appropriate post In the appropriate location. Congrats on the 40 yrs of marriage.

Get her interested in the truck too. Takes some time but got my girl to like the truck so now she encourages it [emoji57]

I start with panning. Estimate I need (want?) new tires by January? Start mentioning it now occasionally. Make your case for why.

Don't spend any money on yourself for a while before you make the move.

Make sure you have a financial plan (not: Honey, when you get paid Friday, I need you to deposit your check so I can get those headers...)

Don't let her read this post.

Do not let any significant other read this post!

OP: Get ready for this:

Women marry men with the belief that they can change their behavior, and men marry women with the belief that their woman won't change.

I have been done modifying my truck. Now every chance I get I keep digging in about a new truck. Realistically I dont want a new one yet but just getting her wore down lol

My car on the other hand is still being modded. Our "deal" which I reniged on before I even bought the car (bought a heritage grille for s great price) might I add was no mods to the car. Hmmm looking back how did that turn out. The worst was when I ordered the new exhaust, came home and seen the giant box in the garage, I was like uh oh this isnt going to go well. She looked at me pointed and said what is that. I said well the box says exhaust so that is my guess. She shook her head and didnt say anything else. After I installed it she did comment and say it sounded better. I have since added headers. She doesnt like how loud it is now. Kids love it and so do i. Working on my next mod to make it a bit louder :)

fast forward to last friday. She goes out to breakfast. Comes home and I have the car on ramsp (see below photo). Putting on a new sway bar. I say he can you give me a hand. Her respnse "if you didnt keep modding it you wouldnt need an extra hand" lol

Its all in good fun, she gets what she wants and I have my hobbies. Does she rib me yea but she knew what she was getting into before we were married. Also I fund my kids 529 college plan and my 401K so its not all fun and games. Now if I was slacking with this then I could understand. My philosohpy you can take it with you so enjoy it now.

Wears a Chevy shirt too

I apologize. I originally found this thread in the "2014 / 2015 / 2016 / 2017 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500" area and now see it is in the lounge. If I can add anything to the conversation I would say that once you are married "your" spending priorities will become "our" priorities. This doesn't mean you can't fund your hobbies, it will just take longer!

I got an allowance, built cars sold them put half back in the budget. After a few years wife didn't care I always put back more than I took out. After 42 years had evey car I ever dreamed of. Been a blast can't complain, just have to be patient.

I can honestly say my wife has adjusted my spending habits in a good way. I used to spend every extra dollar modding my truck or on other toys. Now I budget better, put money away, upgrade the house as we can, and save small amounts of cash every payday in the safe for play money. We travel quite a bit, I upgrade the truck when I can, and we have zero credit card debt. I couldn't say that before we got serious a few years back. I suppose she got me to grow up. Sounds cheesy but she really is the best thing that walked into my life. Now after a black bear tune I'll probably be done, have to start heavily saving in the hopes of having a child.

She doesn't care, I planned enough for us to pay off house and everything before the age of 30( just devoted most of any spare money to debt for years. And boy am I glad I did with the medical developments since then!) so she knows I'm not doing to do anything stupid. Well, that Firebird wasn't supposed to blow up, anyway.

Fortunately I pretty much only spend on (proactive and reactive) maintenance on my truck so she understands. But the family is first and foremost at all times, which means that we need to safely cover our fixed expenses, 401k, savings, and investments before any fun can be considered. After that we get to spend money on the family and ourselves.

And although I could buy less expensive tires for a truck that sees relatively low mileage I still got Michelin defenders, I also bought Moog tie rod ends instead of AC Delco or any other brand. They're quality investments that we both see the value in even if she couldn't care less about trucks.

But... if you still haven't gotten married, don't do it!

Whatever it is you are buying, tell her it costs twice as much as it really does. Then when you get it installled, show her the receipt and tell her you got a screaming deal on it. She'll think you're a financial genius and quit complaining.

Full disclosure: I am only engaged, not married, so I cannot verify anything I have said.
