Need to Upgrade, but in a Lease

Recommended Posts

I just bought leased a 1500 Silverado in January, to tow our small RV trailer (5000 lbs). It works great for that job, but.....

the wife now wants a bigger RV. We're leaning toward fifth wheels. Unfortunately, I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that this truck is too small for them.

Does anyone know if GM will do anything for me as far as turning in the truck, and getting another one (probably also a lease)?

Thanks for any input you have that might help.

You have to pay off the lease - check the fine print as to when you can do that and how much it will cost.

The problem with a 5th wheel is that you put more of a load on the 5th wheel which is the trucks rear axle and tires. You will want a truck with a payload of at least 25% of the loaded weight of the 5th wheel trailer. Start with the trailer and then decide on the truck.

Something to consider is that you can get a much larger trailer that the 1500 can still tow and leave the bed of the truck free for gear. With a standard trailer you can put bikes or camp chairs or even an ATV or two in the back of the truck or use a rack for a boat.

Also the longer the trailer the more restricted you will be on where you can take it. Many national forests have 30' or smaller spaces and even if they have a couple of 35' spaces they are first come first serve at most places. You can always find a space at a KOA if that is your cup of tea.

Suggest you and your wife go to the nearest popular campground and talk to the people there that have different trailers, conventional and 5th wheel and learn what they like or don't like about the trailer and the towing and the layout and even things like the bath and fridge and tank capacity for fluids. As you have already screwed up once it would be wise to proceed with more caution and take the time to know what it is you don't know.
