 what a knucklehead I am...took my 2003 8.1L CC in for oil change, tire rotation, and change Allison external filter.....oil change$26.76,tire rotation $24.95,Allison external filter $48.40....I failed to ask the ever important question "how much?" when I dropped it off....you can buy the Allison filter for $9.00, a local discount tire will rotate my tires for free (10.00 tip), and I can change my own oil....total wake-up call cost me $101.13...man do I feel stupid. Peace, Chas

yep...and whatever happened to posting the prices for labor/parts etc ?....probably a cheap lesson in the long run... last truck I had I did all the aftermarket bolt-ons ...took it to get dyno'ed and realized what a sucker I had been...memo to self, horsepower/torque ratings are established in the lab not at the real world rear-wheel... I should be smarter by now. Chas

???????????????

I know what you mean about "stealer" prices. They should be required to give a price before starting work. I do not think I have EVER been to a dealer service department and recieved a bill that didn't seem like it was 3-4 times too much.

But just think of the cash they are raking in from the individuals that don't have a clue on how to do their own PM. Not saying that is a bad thing. If we all did our own PM then there wouldn't be a need to some extent for the shops and what did operate would be high priced. But we need them. It is sad that they charge so much, but then if I worked there the nice paycheck would be a plus, so I guess it all makes the world go around.

Needless to say, if It doesn't require a special million dollar tool to fix, change, upgrade, or what ever then I do it myself. Bad thing is I get to do the rest of the families as well. The price of being mechanically inclinded.

Don’t feel that bad. I mean live & learn. You defiantly had the right intentions. Look for shops (reputable ones) that offer lifetime oil change deals. My local Goodyear service center has this “lifetime oil change” that I bought for $180. This includes oil, filter, and disposal, top off fluids, visual inspection, & tire rotation for the life of my truck (I don't even get charge the disposal fee). They change $30 for the same service. I have about 23,500 mile on my truck now and that’s about 7 oil changes so far. If I compare it to paying $30 per oil change if I didn’t have the lifetime oil change then I would have paid $210 so far on excluding tax. So I’ve already saved $30 and the rest of them are essentially free. That’s the best way to go and they use Havoline motor oil, which is my preferred brand. :fume:

At least you know that if you are tight on TIME for other things, what the cost of it is.

Like oil changes. I know that I could save an easy $25 if I did it myself, which most times I do. But the time it takes to get the ramps out, put it up on ramps, change the oil and filter, misc cleanup from the shooting oil out of the pan, taking it down off the ramps, puting everything away, and I didn't mention the time it would take to get the new oil and filter and still have to make time to dispose of the oil/filter in an EPA friendly way. That's an easy 1.5 hours total time.

Sad part is, the mechanics don't make GREAT money. They are paid like $10-$13 per hour charged (at $50-$70/hr).
