8 Speed Transmission Recall?

Hate to admit - and I’ve not yet admitted on this forum - my Sierra is now a 2018 Honda Pilot Touring AWD.   I’m now a 140-mile/day commuter and when I bought my truck, I wasn’t.

The calc was twofold.  Highway MPG has increased 40% and the depreciation schedule extended an unknown but certainly tremendous amount.

My wife drives a 4Runner.   We still have a truck in the family.

You might have jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. The Pilots 9 speed ZF transmission is notoriously worse than GM’s transmission. My wife has a 2017 Pilot Elite we purchased new. 15,000 miles later and she has already had the transmission replaced. Service manager said they have replaced several. Don’t google Honda Pilot 9 speed transmission if you have high blood pressure.

Yea, I’ve read most of the reviews of the 9 speed.    I only have 1500 miles on the Pilot but the very seldom less-than-perfect shifts to date have been minor.  Certainly I have been battle toughened by my good looking Sierra’s transmission!

I do see Honda has made some programming mods to the 2019.

At at least Honda didn’t say “operating within normal parameters” and send you on your way.   Do y’all like the vehicle?

Honestly other than the transmission issues we love it. We have two daughters that play college lacrosse. The Pilot is what we use to travel around to all their games and tournaments. We had the dealer install the tow package when we purchased it, amazingly it pulls my 4000+ boat around town better than you would expect. Wife will likely get another in a few years when their new 10 speed makes it into them. Heard much better things about that transmission so far.

Thanks.  I hope my transmission holds.

Another thing i find interesting:  I also have two daughters in school, one at Ole Miss the other as a D1 (first year dental school).   4 hours and 2 hours away.   That’s not THE commute, but it’s A commute.  One less frequent, but more fun!

Godspeed!

Update again:

Next visit to the dealership to do the triple flush on the shuddering transmission. while I was in the lobby waiting (only a few minutes) reading my lemon law book; the service manager came out and said it looks like we have an update on fixing your transmission. now GM is saying go ahead and skip the triple flush and replace the torque converter. well well, that's what I asked about to begin with if they knew it would fix it, why not!? so  they kept it about a week to replace the torque converter. I've driven it about 700 miles so far and it is very smooth, no shaking or shuddering so far. the thing that worries me is how much damage did it do to the rest of the transmission driving it with the wrong fluid in it and the torque converter going out (metal shavings pumped throughout the transmission) what is going to happen say 50,000 miles down the road? this was to be my last new truck since I am retired and on a fixed budget. I won't have the money to pay for replacing a transmission... concerned, don’t know what I should do even if it seems like it's fixed?

Whats your update since you had this done? I've gotten the triple flush with the new synthetic Mobil 1 fluid, but no torque converter or valve body replacement.

Jdub289f, I have had the fluid flushed, torque converter replaced (back in '18) & had the "new" fluid flush done this past February.  That flush worked great for about 200 miles.  It didn't shudder, it shifted when I thought it should have, but after 200 miles it was back to the same ole thing, actually worse now that it was before last flush.

I had the flush done as well in feb I have a 18 with the 8 speed. Truck is back at the dealer today because after about a 1000 miles it’s acting up again. Service guy said next step is throttle body and torque converter. Amazing you gotta take a wrench to a truck this new.

Here is another one.  2017 6.2/8 speed.

At 25,000 miles replaced torque converter.

Now at 56,000 miles it started shuttering again.

Yesterday they replaced ATF with a "machine they got from GM".

Today doing much better.

We will see how it does over the next several thousand miles
