Happy with your seatbelt recall fix?

I'm taking my truck to a dealer this afternoon for the next complimentary oil change, and will ask if they will do the recall fix without cutting. That's the only way I'll allow the fix to be done at this point.

 

Just dropped my truck off for this and told them no cutting, service writer agrees that cutting this up is not something he would do to his own truck so he agreed to ignore that part of the recall notice thankfully.

You guys are WAY over-reacting. The reason we get the hack job is because our trucks are used - no matter how nice we think they look. Your only choice will be to refuse the cuts or buy a new trim piece yourself. GM is under no obligation to give us brand new replacement parts for a cosmetic piece.

 

Same thing applies to insurance when you get in an accident. After a year you get aftermarket parts. And then after 5-7 years you get used parts. Don't like it? Pony up the extra cash yourself. Simple as that.

I don't think i was over reacting at all when i told my service writer to not let his tech cut any of the trim on my truck, especially after seeing multiple people who have had the fix completed without the need of hacking the rubber cover. It's my truck and regardless what I say goes, period end of discussion, i could careless what directive GM has put forth! Until they make my monthly payment they can pound sand if they think i'm going to just submit and let them do what they want so a tech can save 15 minutes of time!

I do not believe that calling a hack job for what it is is over-reacting. I hate hypotheticals, but if there was a cooling system problem and GM's fix was to permanently remove the hood or just cut a giant hole in the hood with a sawzall, would you be ok with that?

 

This is also not the same as getting used parts through insurance. A used part is completely different than a damaged/mangled part. Would you honestly accept the insurance giving you a mangled part to replace your previously good part due to damage that was no fault of your own? Would you a car with mangled trim on it? If not, then why do you expect owners to be ok with GM telling dealers to hack up their cars? It makes no difference to me if the trim is small or if it was the entire car, cosmetics are cosmetics no matter the size/shape/location. I paid for a car with a particular look. I paid for a car with no damage. I'm not going to let GM take that away from me after the fact unless they want to start paying for the car.

 

Maybe you're OK with not caring about the condition of your car, owning cars with damage, and/or half-assed maintenance/repairs jobs. That's completely fine if you are. I am not.

I do agree that the cut should be clean and not mangled. But if they cut it properly, it's fine for this part.

I would have been OK with the cuts if they removed less material and were of a good and repeatable nature. The amount of material removed just created an unnecessary eye sore. More importantly to me is if they came up with a solution that made the same cut every time and removed the human factor since not all techs are created equal then I would have been OK with that too. They could have come up with a better solution than using an exacto knife, but decided to take a foolish shortcut and it shows in the quality.

I know it's been said before, but if a 'hack job' saves money for GM, and GM feels it's acceptable, why didn't GM want to 'save money' on their unsold trucks? There must be a reason GM wanted their trucks fixed w/o taking the less expensive 'hack job'. We all know why!!

Is this the first recall by any mfr where the "fix" for new, on-lot inventory differed from sold units?

Actually I did already pony up with a GM extended warranty which extends my bumper to bumper for 5 years instead of 2 years.

You might want to go back and re read that GMPP extended warranty. It's not a true bumper to bumper warranty as it doesn't cover body panels, trim pieces or wear out items.

Just to show what the dealership did to mine. As I stated before, mine doesn't look hacked up. So it depends on where you go, same as mostly any shop where some will do better jobs than others. All they did to mine was cut the rear flap in 2 spots and fold it down. For all I know maybe my normal use did that and they didn't think they needed to trim any part off. I'll also say again that I understand a shop or dealer shouldn't do "hack jobs", but this just seems like one of those times where you don't need to pick a fight. Sometimes you should pick a fight and other times you just let it go. I say that because the amount of time it takes you to complain about it, you could have just trimmed it yourself to look better. Especially if you take it back. With the amount of time and gas you'd use if you did decide to go back you could have ordered a new trim piece and cut it how you wanted to. If you haven't had it done yet then try telling them to just replace the bracket and leave the trim piece alone. Another reason I say to pick your battles is that just fix it yourself and just give that dealership a bad review. That way GM knows about it and if you just complain to the service manager or writer then GM won't find out. When it comes down to it, this is only cosmetic. It's not like this "hack job" can kill you. Yes they shouldn't make it look like sh*t, but I just don't think this is on the level to where you should make it into a huge deal.

I knew about the "wear" items, I'm not sure if the original warranty covers them, but body and trim pieces are new. I basically bought it because of all the electronics on these vehicles now days. Even something as simple as a starter could set you back several hundred dollars. My view was try and cover it till it is paid for, LOL.
