question: There's a faint chattering noise when accelerating on th

Recommended Posts

I have the same thing on my 2014. I am not buying that it is a water pump or bad fuel. I run 93 every tank. The noise comes from underneath the drivers floor and is not constant. I appears to me like transfer case or torque converter? I have tried to run the truck in manually and it seems to change for the better. Took it to the dealer and got the same crap as most. Thinking new truck.....

Mine is driver side from behind the dash where the vent is. Injectors could easily cause that chatter noise

mines new with 5k and "New" doesn't solve the problem. if I didn't lose so much money, i'd go with another truck.

Well, I did the new truck. 2014 was the first year of that model. I haven't heard of any 2016 doing this. It is possible but I lost confidence in the 14. Feeling better now.

My 15 4.3L does this and it drives me insane! I was going to go tomorrow to get it looked at before my warranty is up... even though it won't expire at 36k. I drove a 6.2L the other day and I didn't here it, but I was in awe over the engine so I wasn't really paying attention.

I honestly think it's in every single truck. It's the sound of the injectors, they make that chatter sound somewhat like a diesel. Some trucks just may not notice it as much. My 15 did it every once in a while, just not as often as my 16. All trucks I've drove I've heard it at some point, some almost never and some every drive.

My 16 does it also. It is completely random, but seems to happen more often at highway speeds. Sometimes lasts a few minutes, sometimes up to 30. How loud it is corresponds to how hard the gas pedal is pushed. Gas grade makes no difference.

It does seem random, but mine has a pattern where it's most noticeable. It occurs loudest from 1500-2000 rpm, especially when I'm coasting/maintaining light throttle on the highway or a road and it stays at that rpm. I'm absolutely convinced it's completely normal and while I agree annoying, it's the nature of direct injection. I also only run premium 93 octane if that helps

this is correct. I was on my way to the dealership for my first oil change and noticed it while lightly accelerating, certainly not as loud as previously when going up a hill but enough to hear it.

when I coast or on cruise, I can hear it if I give it a little more gas to speed up. Yes very annoying when the radio's off.

All trucks you've owned are they domestic and/or foreign?

All trucks, domestic and foreign?

All gm direct injected trucks in this body style have done it that I've drove, from single cab to extended to crew, 15-16 models. I haven't driven any 14 models. The V6 and 5.3 both do it. I haven't driven any 6.2s. Some more noticeable than others. I've driven at least 10 of these trucks as well. My 15 had a lot of issues so I drove a wide array of rental trucks. My truck was then broken into and destroyed on the lot so I drove a few 16 rentals before I bought my new 16.

The sound is a loose catalyst inside the catalytic converter.

I installed some LT headers on one of our work trucks last year. This truck (2013) was making the same noise; and when I removed the factory cats and looked inside, the catalyst would move inside.

The catalyst wasn't damaged, it was just the design. GM is using a ceramic base catalyst which is sandwiched inside the converter casing. This design causes the catalyst to move back and forth slightly as the exhaust pulse changes.

The 2014 and up converters look identical to this 2013 1500.
