question: There's a faint chattering noise when accelerating on th

Recommended Posts

Hello, I just noticed over the weekend (doing a 800 mile trip) that my 16 Silverado is making a faint chattering noise (or ticking noise) from the driver side when I accelerate during uphill or on cruise. It doesn't always happen. What I mean by this is, if I stop the vehicle (like rest area) and get out for a bit, I can come back and press the gas peddle (even on cruise) and it doesn't do it. But if I drive it a while while on cruise or a slight hill climb I can hear it. It's not really loud, just a faint chattering noise (similar to if you were to test a spark plug out of socket). I don't lose power if I had to accelerate, but because the cabin is so quite I can hear every little thing from the engine.

:driving:

Sorry if this is the best I can explain this.

While driving the AC was on. I have only 3800 miles on the truck and I rarely floor the peddle. I put in 87 octane (or regular gas), usually Costco gas, Chevron only and 76 if I had to.

many years ago we have a Chevy Astro van and I recall it doing something similar to that. I'm not sure if it's a Chevy thing or not.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Could be pinging/knocking under load, not serious enough to activate the knock sensor and retard timing. Might want to try a tank of 89 or 93 octane to see if it quiets, won't hurt anything but your wallet

We don't have 89 octane here in Oregon/Washington. We have 87 and 93. No mid-grade.

My 2016 does this as well and has since new 2 months ago. I would guess its the direct injection but premium fuel hasnt helped me.

hmm, I haven't put in premium fuel just because of that. I'm glad you're experiencing it as well and not just me. Thanks for the insight.

I just got my 2016 Z71 like 3 weeks ago and mine started doing this about a week ago. I am going tomorrow to have it looked at and have a list of thing I think it could be or have read about others. I describe it as a fluttering or like maybe a card stuck in some bicycle spokes going really fast. Anyways two dealers have never went under the hood yet but drove with me and told me it was normal. I will post on here again if they fix it. One guys post I read on another forum was the water coolant pump? He said they replaced that and BOOM! fixed. I will find out though, unless you already have so please let me know!

well i just got back from the dealership service department and they said it was nothing to worry about and that it is normal exhaust flow noise.... haha i guess Silverado's and Sierra's are a little noisy.

Good to know.. but they're just CYA on their part I suppose. Off course most dealerships will deny it to the end anyways. What they should explain is how come it does it sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. Doesn't seem to make sense IMO.

Yeah my buddy back home drives a Silverado as well, he's also a diesel mechanic so i am going to see if he can either figure it out or atlas explain it. I don't know what else to do because i even called GM and they just set me up an appointment. It really pisses me off that the second time i went out of three times the guy told me i could pull any truck off the lot and it would do the same thing. well i did just that and the SAME exact 2016 Silverado didn't make a single damn noise! So i have resorted to just playing music all the time. If you guys ever hear anything or figure this out please let me know.

Mine does it too, 2016 Sierra slt all terrain. Really annoying. It directly correlates with how much I press the gas, when I let off it dies off

Thats EXACTLY how mine is and its not all the time either. It just randomly happens.

I've noticed it tends to do it with a/c on. Because my 2015 did it maybe a few times, and if it did the a/c was on. Regular air/heat I don't ever remember it doing it. I'll test the theory out with my 2016.

Wouldn't it be an easy test to put in a tank of 91 or 93 octane and see if it changes?

It's not the motor. I run 93 octane in my 5.3, do it on all my vehicles.
