2016 2500HD Viberation/Shaking

Recommended Posts

I'm in the club now as well...730 miles 2016 2500 6.6 crew 4x4

All 4 tires RFB...all out of spec according to Pico test and tire shop.

6 tires coming next week ...he ordered a couple spares lol.

These are michelin ltx 18 inch

I think people should do a log of truck motor crew or not and see where most are having issues...

Is it all hd frames....or is it all chevy trucks that are a certain lenght as far as wheel base...?

I do know that the 1500 and 2500 share same wheel lenght on a med bed for the 1500...and standard for the crew 2500.

So far tires seem not to be it.

What about size....20 over 18.?

What about the guys who have 17...

Just throwing ideas.

Are the leaf springs just to darn stiff.?

Bought my 15 2500HD a little bit over 2 years ago an racked up 56k and NEVER had a vibration issue...
Had the tires replaced last month and instantly noticed a bad vibration..
Had it back to the dealer 3 times for anaylsis.. They rebalanced and road forced them multiple times before I took the truck to a shop that had a new Hunter Road Force balancer.. I stood in amazement as I watched a brand new tire roll a 61 on it.. Turned out all but 1 tire was good the rest were 32, 41 and 10.. I spent the next 3 weekends driving tires back and forth.. I went thru 9 new Michelins to find most RF'd over what GM is now calling good which for those who are having issues that number is 15 lbs. DO NOT ACCEPT ANY TIRE ABOVE THAT NUMBER!!!
For those who have issues, I recommend getting on the Hunter website and locating a shop that has this piece of equipment..

Bring this TECH Sheet below to the shop and MAKE SURE THEY FOLLOW IT STEP BY STEP!! Oh, and don't let them tell you its only for half tons...The issue spills over into all vehicle Makes,Models and Tire MFG's

That's exactly what I'm saying...

Go drive a brand new 2016 off the dealers lot, the trucks vibrate so bad you could mix a gallon of paint in the console...

Tire mfgs have changed the compounds and manufacturing processes and they are inherent to have excessive road force..

The tires are only a part of the GM issues, other problems are shocks and ring and pinion non conformances..

FYI... The standard Road Force for LT tires is normally 30lbs... GM has lowered that to 15lbs... I can tell you that you want less than 15 lbs I had one that was 13 and I could still feel it slightly..

Also the tech that is mounting the tires plays a huge role. If he does not pay attention to the manufacturer placement marks on the tires (yellow or red dots/stickers) that will have an effect on what the outcome will be.. after bringing my truck elsewhere i found the original tech didnt do this and it had a pretty big effect on how much weight the wheels took...

I have dropped my pressures to 55psi in the front and 60psi in the rear and it made a world of difference. When i bring the truck in for its first service i will pump them back up to the dealer spec 60psi front and 70psi rear and let them know if i still have the issue at their recommended psi. These Goodyear tires are the worst tires i have ever had on a truck. If i put the 80psi that is stated on the tire i get motion-sick from the shaking. Otherwise i like the truck.

The Goodyears are the worst.. I know many who have them and they wanted them off immediately after getting the trucks..

Mine were Michelin's and the factory set were perfect.. I had the dealer do an alignment and 4 new shoes and it vibrated soooo much I brought it back the next day..

I suggest taking my advice in the post above and have them all Road Forced balanced by a "REPUTABLE" tire shop with the Hunter machine...If all else it will rule out that thats where the vibe are coming from. ...

New set of 6 michelin tires cam in only 2 were good enough to mount. But I have 4 new tires at stock at pressure and same speed 67. To 76 ish...

Another full set of tires installed and now another full set being ordered.

I don't care I'll try again....guess that's what happens when you try to get a 3/4 ton truck to ride like a caddie and change the frame to much.

It forces vibrations from side to side, from what the dealer said not front to back.

I also had the vibration issue at approx 67 to 75 mph...you could feel it in your seat and slightly in the steering wheel. The empty passenger seat would shake along with the dancing water bottle in the center console or drivers door. I would video the passenger seat and water bottle and panned up to show the speedometer and outside road surface. Made multiple video's to show the Service Manager. Had the dealer rebalance the OEM junk Goodyear's three times. Each time, it was better, but it would come back...more video's recorded. The last time, they Road Force balanced them. This was the best, but it came back.

Eventually, I got the dealer to warranty the OEM Goodyear tires. I upgraded to BFG KO2 in 275/60R20...and only had to pay the difference from the full credit they gave me from the junk Goodyear's. My new tires are 1" taller than the 265/60R20 Goodyear's, so before we did the swap, I installed a leveling kit.

Vibration is completely gone...very happy with the new look too.

Any answer to this issue? Currently testing a '17 L5P 2500 with 10,000miles. Certain K2 half tons have serious shake issues as well with no definitive solution at 55mph+. People have balanced tires, bought new rims, machined axle faces, replaced rotors, balanced driveshafts, added air bags, added aftermarket spring shackles, sway bars, replaced shocks, replaced hubs, replaced cab mounts, and Pico Scope all will no real solution. A old wise diesel mechanic suspects something in the steering box as the vibrations are not present all the time. Do the 2500's run an electric Rack & Pinion style steering like the half tons? Could these modules be so sensitive a slight variance in tolerance can cause something like the steering to vibrate itself? The truck isn't doing it currently but the mechanic I talked to figures they all will eventually. Is this on everyone's 2015-2017 2500 or just select trucks?

The 2500 does have the electric power steering...I believe it started on the 2016 model...and yes, this steering box has had numerous issues, but they relate more to steering, or lack of steering, as opposed to steering wheel vibration. In my case, and from what I researched, the stock Goodyear's definitely have an issue. Like I stated in a previous post, when we swapped mine for BFG KO2s, my vibration issue was gone...and remains gone. We put these on at 6K miles and I'm currently at 24K miles. But I do rotate and RF every 5K ...

Digital steering assistant on the HD's is not the same as the electric system on the 1500.

IMO, the 2500's with digital steering system steer MUCH nicer than the 1500's.

On the HD's, digital steering assistant is still not used on all trims.

Standard  system is ----  Steering, Recirculating Ball with smart flow power steering system

On SLE and SLT:--  NV8    Steering, Digital Steering Assist

But  NV8 - Requires Crew Cab model or Double Cab model equipped with (L5P) Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 engine.

On 1500 , all trims:

Steering, Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist, rack-and-pinion
