2016 Silverado 2500HD Steering woes

1500 is rack and pinion. Car suspension. 2500 is torsion bar A frame Truck suspension. The only people having "trouble" are on the internet. Not everyone is unhappy. When you start vibrating or shaking you'll be back talking how GM suxs, etc. Good luck with your class action.

700,000 GM trucks recalled, must be a lot of people on the internet with problems as you claim...

bummer...

about 23k miles and 14 months after having it fixed, the steering slop is back. Noticed it on my way home tonight. Will be scheduling a service appointment.

The dealer performed the TSB #PIT5501E (or newer), which is the locktite fix. This TSB was not available when I had my initial issues last spring, so I'm hoping this is a permanent fix. They replaced the steering gear last spring. I expressed my concern about having issues after my warranty is up and they filed something called a 'component letter' with GM, which would provide me additional warranty on the steering components I've had issues with. The letter is good for 60 months / 75k miles. GM needs to approve it, but my service tech said he expects it to be approved. I'll know more this week.

Truck seems good and steering is nice and tight again.

The recall is for total loss of PS on the 1500. This has nothing to do with the 2500HD steering slop.

Took my 2016 3500 HD in for the PIT5501E on Tuesday the 15th. Everything tight now and steers great again . No issues now. Can see the lock tight under the nut. Time will tell.

Wonder how much life we get out of the lock tight.

I may have my buddy put a small spot weld on mine to keep it from backing off..

I have other friends that have had no problems. Lock tight should cure it if that's whats happening? Tack weld wouldn't go over good at the dealer. The lash may have to be adjusted. The service writer said they took my gearbox out, adjusted it and reinstalled? Told me if there's any more problems let them know. We will see.

Well add my 2016 silverado 2500hd duramax to the list. Just took it to the dealer for excessive play in the steering yesterday 8/21/2017. Mine went from 0 play to 1970 dodge motorhome steering wheel slop at the 15,000 mile mark.

Service writer knew about the TSB which ends in F now. So, he told me they were going to do the required re-torque. Supposed to hear back from them this morning when they test drive it.

I've got to say I am not at all happy about this. I am like many of you, I worked my ass off to be able to purchase one of these $65k trucks, and come to find out they have a serious problem with one of the two most important components that make up a vehicle (steering and brakes). I don't like the feeling of being lied to and reassured that there is not a problem with the steering box. I made sure I notified my attorney, so at least if something were to happen, somebody knows.

well, they said my truck was ready. I went to pick it up, and didnt get a mile down the road from the dealership and the stabilitrac service light comes on. So i turn right back around and take it to the dealer again. He swore they test drove it, but thats a lie because it only has 3 more miles than when i dropped it off. The tech drove it before the repair so thats where the 3 miles comes from. I am beyond PISSED OFF! I have already wasted an entire 8 hours of my work week dealing with this.

From what I see the F removes the 2017 from the TSB. modoutlaw does your receipt from dealership show a computer flash for relearn and any current software? So far I am happy with steering but only have a few hundred miles on the truck since repairs. I requested the service writer drive with me before I took back the truck after repairs. We went for a short drive and everything was ok. He mentioned that GM was only giving them 1 hour to preform this repair. Thats not enough time? Don't know if this is true or not but that's not good.It is not the dealerships fault they are following GM's TSB PIT5501E . As long as they do everything that's listed on the TSB. My concern is that they won't be given enough time to properly repair it. If the lash has to be tightened it has to come off the truck they say. An hour is not going to do this. GM show 1.8 in the TSB as estimated times? Even that not enough time. i was able to see the locktite on the nut and stud so that much was done on my truck. It is very fustrating on a 65,000 truck. I usually don't buy the first years new systems. This truck has Digital Assist Steering.Connects into the computer. I think its new for the 2016. Has problems for sure. Trying to make ours trucks drive like a luxury car? I still have my 2005 Duramax and it's steering is great at 195,000. Good luck with your repair. Give them a chance to make it right. Then go from there.

Yes, they followed the latest TSB, the steering did feel better in the short 1 mile round trip that I accumulated before the "service stabilitrac warning light" came on the dash. So im unsure if they left something unplugged or damaged. Would have been nice if they would have test drove it, instead of forcing me to waste another 3 hours of a work day to come do that for them.

However I'm taking it in stride, and will give them due opportunity to make it right. just frustrating. My past 4 vehicles have been toyota tacomas and i guess i got spoiled in the fact they just needed spark plugs an fan belts and tires for the 5 years i owned each of them. Not saying I dont love the duramax, but damn.......

My father has a '06 3500 duramax and it drives like a dream as well. Wish there was a way to delete the crappy steering box with variable power assist and put the steering box that was on the 2015 and put it on the 2016 and 2017 and call it a day.

In reading there's 2 ways to fix the steering looseness. The simple way is if the lash adjustment unscrewed it's self out of the top plate. The locknut doesn't turn. They clean the threads , apply a generous amount of blue locktite, crank it back down, torque to spec's and do the computer reprogramming. I can't see that they took my steering box out so I think this is what my repair consisted of. I talked to the mechanic before the job and he said something about disconnecting the steering link in the system. The service writer said they have to remove box. but I don't think my was removed? My was leaking a little fluid because I had it on my lift and saw it. When I wiggled my wheels it was scary how much looseness was in the steering. My lash adjustment stud has loosened or sure. I didn't look to see if there was a gap under the lock nut. I would have had to remove the wheel liner. About 20 or more screws. I know this because of removing the right side to change my fuel filter. Pain in butt but I did install the cut out to make the fuel filter change a little easier in future. I am changing my oil this week and will try and determine what was done. Box removed? I don't this so? Doesn't say on receipt it was removed. My box is not leaking steering fluid now that I can see. So I believe the nut and lash shaft had unscrewed. Maybe the guy that tightened the nut didn't do the job right at the steering box manuf? If the lock tite holds problems solved I hope? The stablitrac has always been full of issues. I found out this winter If you don't disable it 4x4 is almost useless when u spin a wheel. So If I know if 4x4 is needed disable it first. My buddy has a 2017 2500 hd duramax and loves it. But this year a lot of motor internal changes so I passed on it. Hopefully it's good for him. Good luck with your fix.
