2016 Silverado 2500HD Steering woes

with the internet, it does not matter what new vehicle you buy - there will be some problem that gets a lot of attention. you do not want to worry needlessly or worse yet trade your truck in, since you will just find that the new model you get has some other problem that people keep talking about.

 

the gm hd trucks, particularly the gassers, are about as trouble free a vehicle as you can buy. enjoy your trucks and if your steering gets loose,have it fixed. end of story.

Seems more these days trucks are bought to be driven as cars not for what they are intended for...work and hard play. A lot of new trucks immediately modified for looks or the fad and when problems develop so begins the drama. The diesel guys are valid issues because GM skimped on a good design and rushed it to be competitive. I can only believe over time it will be remedied. If you want a beer can go japanese.

I really don't want to give up my 3/4 ton.. The crew cab and long bed are a must for me. They replaced my entire steering box and pitman arm...All is good for now. Did they do that for you? I do however think it's pretty pathetic that thy had this issue on a heavy duty truck. I feel as if I'm just waiting to see what goes wrong next. This is supposed to be the strong big dog vehicle. I feel like it's a fragile flower.

I felt the same way about the truck size, bed and motor. I did have it into the dealer about 8 times. They did the first few bulletins as well as a number of alignments. I swamped tires, hope the sloppiness was just the rubber. It continued to wander, especially to the right. Faster meant sloppier. I just could not trust it to take me to some of the destinations I drive. Like I said, GM has dropped the ball on this and I have filed a complaint with the federal transportation safety dept but don't expect a thing to happen to a lobby group as large as GM is.

Add mine to the wondering steering list. I had an additional symptom of metalic sounds while truning at slow speeds. Had the retighten and loc-tite TSB. Noise went away and I'll wait to see if she still wonders.

 

Now here is the intersting part. The serice writer said that they had been advised that the replacement of the steering gears was not to be done becsue it wasnt fixing the problems. (odd I know). I said not to worry, if mine continues to wonder, they will continue to fix it.

I have to wonder about the 'expertise' of the service departments of the dealers. Reading the posts on this thread since last fall from you guys. Some of you report the dealer fixes it correctly, on the initial visit. While others have been put thru the wringer w/ multiple visits to the same or multiple dealers w no improvement.

Having a good dealer makes all the difference. I'll be buying my next vehicle from my dealer based solely on the service dept. Even things they couldn't fix off the bat, they've been honest, transparent, and fair.

Update...I just picked up my truck. Seems fine for now. Feels tight again with no wandering at 70mph. They wrote on the repair invoice "Steering box leaking fluid. Replaced steering box with new one. Replaced pitman arm. Tested, all ok now" I noticed that there is still fluid under the truck on the sway bars and plastic guard. Hopefully that's residual fluid from the last leak. If this doesn't work I'm getting out while I can. I hate to eat a few bucks but it is what it is. I hope it doesn't get to that because I really like the truck. Any reports of the 17 1500's having this issue? Or do they just shake lol? Thanks

Update again...After getting my entire box and pitman arm replaced the truck is now leaking again worse than before. He said it's probably a hose but who knows. It's back in the shop for the third time in a month.

At 7K mine went. Never had any leaks. They did the retighten and Loctite TSB. All good until this weekend at 13K. Thank goodness I wasn't towing anything. Calling in a few minutes to have them come get it.

I recently passed 9k miles (Flint built '16 SierraHD) and my steering is not as tight as it used to be. Here's a quick video I took, is this what others are experiencing?

I just experienced steering issues with my 2500HD Midnight edition, it started a week ago and gradually got worse. I had about three to four inches of play when driving this last weekend. I have 23,500 miles on it now when it started. I called the dealership and dropped the truck off yesterday, when i dropped it off and described the problem the mechanic said they are aware of the issue and already have a fix for it. There is a nut inside the steering gearbox that is coming loose and they had the truck for about three hours and it was as good as new now. The fix is to replace the nut and run a jamb nut on top of it with lock tight and they said that would prevent it from coming loose again. MY QUESTION IS WHY ISN'T THERE A SAFETY RECALL?? When driving with this condition i was fighting the steering wheel to keep the truck in my lane and on the road. So if you are having issues like this bring it in it should be a free fix.
