Engine Tick - 2015 GMC Sierra 5.3

My 15 Sierra has a tick to it almost sounds like a old model A running. I'm at 38,000 no problems. My buddy has a 14 Silverado sounds the same he has 95,000 on his no issues. I do think that's just how they sound.

I would agree but I had a 16 model that didn't have the tick.

Sewing machines are loud also but they work fine!

Maybe the cheaper ones (i.e. toyota) but the 50-60k sewing machines (GMC and Chevy) should not sound that way. Otherwise, faithful customers such as myself will stop being so faithful. I hope your reading this GM.

I call bs, on how they sound.  Just bad engineering!  It doesn't have to become a problem for it to be bad, it's bad by design.

For example, my has been coming on pretty loudly - NOT ON COLD days, but on warm days or during longer drivers, it doesn't come on right away after the vehicle has been started so you know it has something to do with the engine being warm/hot etc.

On a 90 degree day you can hear it pretty loudly when putting foot on the accelerator.  I'm sure if you go into a dealership and test drove a brand new one it will not sound like that.  If this is true that they just sound like this then it would be making the noise every time, why would it only come on during certain times/condition?

I know there is no FIX for this, GM's BS regarding it being normal is a cop out way of saying we don't give a rats about it cause it's not going to kill anyone.

Well gentlemen, after listening to my truck sound like something was going to rattle loose from the engine bay every time I towed or went on the highway (not to mention the typical marbles in a can during any and all other acceleration), I took it in for service again.  The technician "didn't hear anything".  Manager asked if I wanted to drive along with the tech, to which I replied "that won't matter, you can't fix it anyways".  I then proceeded to give the service manager a piece of my mind explaining that I think GM has a major issue on their hands with the variable displacement V8s.

Long story short, I got rid of my engine rattle/tick.  Ford dealer gave me a nice trade in.  I'm sure there is a litany of issues with Fords as well, but an obnoxious,  unfixable engine sound is not one of them.  Good luck to all of you!

You made a wise choice. I recently replaced my vacuum pump after trying almost everything else and that didn't fix it either. I noticed that the service writers won't even attempt to acknowledge the sound or issue. Ill be trading for a ford or ram very soon and after my experience with General Motors, I don't plan to ever return. Truth is I don't really care about the number of problems I've had with my chevys but acknowledging the flaws and fixing the issues is what keeps customers. I was brand loyal until my last two trucks. Good luck!

I traded my 2017 SLT 4x4 Premium Plus with 16.5k miles on it for about $6k less than I bought it for.  Ford gave me what RAM and Carmax offered too.  I actually ended up in a 2015 Ford F150 FX4 Lariat, completely loaded, 44k miles, 100k mile powertrain and bumper to bumper warranty, Ford certified.  I basically only added tax, tag and title to my debt to do that.

What did you get compared to KBB trade in value? Mines a '17 LT Z71 with a few added packages. 13.5k. I've been thinking about similarly equipped 2016-17 XLT or Lariats

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes Adam. Best of luck with you and your new Ford.

Be sure they update the Seatbelt Tensioner Fire recall before you take delivery.

Wish I would have replied sooner but I supposes trading in for a Ford might not be a bad idea.

Pretty sure I have located where the noise is coming from - try this to see if the noise goes away:

1. Put in neutral and rev engine around 1,000 - 1,5000 rpm (you should be able to here it ticking)

2. Turn steering wheel all the way to the left while in that rpm range (haven't tried turning right yet) and you'll note that the noise disappears

3. Let off the gas and bring to an idle then turn wheel back to center

4. Noise should be gone when accelerating both in v4 and v8 mode

The noise completely goes away when i do this - whether doing city driving or on the highway, it's completely gone...There are only two causes that would make it go away, 1) the steering boot is letting the noise in and reseals itself after turning the wheel or 2) the steering assembly - from the boot all the way to the tie rods - is making the noise somewhere.

Makes sense when going over bumps that the noise goes away...something has to be loose/rattling down there. The steering assembly and components are all electronic now (new design) and does not run off of engine power (i.e power steering pump - simultaneously affecting any other pulley along the serpentine belt for that matter). I believe the noise gets louder due to engine vibration (i.e. rattling the steering assembly which is located right under the engine).

It's a wild guess but thought I'd share. Let me know if the above works for any of you all.

I will try to figure this shit out this weekend and post a pic/video if noise is located and stopped for good.
