Engine Tick - 2015 GMC Sierra 5.3

I've tried.  Problem is the sound isn't present at idle.  Those engines make so many noises, it's hard to track things down.  Everything to me sounds like it's vibrating.  Vacuum pump, fuel line, etc.

I had the fuel feed pipe replaced to no avail.  I've settled on the fact that it is a rattle somewhere, because I can go over a bump and the noise stops for a while.  When the weather cools down a bit, I am going to tap around under the truck to try and locate things.  Also planning to dynamat the driver floor and firewall inside.

One thing I've read on these forums kinda makes sense as a culprit, and its the starter not fully retracting and bouncing off the flywheel.  This could be intermittent, and initiated/stopped with bumps.

It’s hardly belt tensioner related?

Yes. A roush raptor and few lariats and platinums. It strange one street probably 15 houses cheapest probably 1.2mil and 8-9 of those houses have at least 1 f150 if not 2.

So, what you’re saying is they’ve spent all their money on their million dollar homes and couldn’t afford to buy a real truck, the professional grade GMC. [emoji23]

Interesting thought there Blk17Machinep.  While shopping for a Ford or Dodge (for the lower cost), my wife insisted on a GM, and I told her it was going to cost an additional $5k.  I still ended up with the GM.  And no, not just because she said so...lol.  I've got a 2000 Z71 that has 295K miles on it with original motor and trans.

Best thing you did, Ford is not a bad truck it’s just a disposable truck. I’ve owned multiple Fords and aside of my Saleen they were all crappy built. Last ford I had was a 2008 and there was just nothing I was happy with except for the King Ranch mahogany color and the leather seats. Every ford owner I know feels their trucks are substandard, they just go back to watching the Ford commercial making them feel better. My brother in law ordered a pretty platinum 4X4, jacked it up very tastefully and says he wishes he had bought a GMC. One thing you’ll always notice immediately from a ford owner, they’ll always quote a Ford commercial and just have nothing else personally to say, GMC owners love their trucks and if you ask a GMC owner what he or she likes about their truck they’ll talk about everything. A flashback just happened, years ago, I bought a full size Eddie Bauer bronco, went in a field and got stuck, shock absorber brackets broke from the welds, 4x4 would sometimes engage and mostly not turn off, it was fun taking off the top. My GMC Jimmy Diesel was a tank, indestructible and just kept going and going like the Energizer Bunny. Stick with GMC, Professional Build

Seems like this thread has gone in the wrong direction, maybe leave it to what it was created for.

What direction do you feel this thread is going too?

I’ve been on here since the early 14s, it rare for a thread to stay on point. No big deal, the next guy can steer it right back.

You’re absolutely correct! Not being argumentative but, I’m still waiting to hear as to what direction he feels this thread is heading to?

I have a Theory on these mysterious engine problems. My 2017 developed a serious HPFP leak, it was pouring gasoline down into the oil crankcase. It was a least 2 quarts over full on the oil dipstick with pure gasoline. Dealer replaced the HPFP under warranty but it was a very noisy engine after this incident. Now combine this with the extended oil change intervals and we have a recipe for disaster. I think there is probably a percentage (hopefully a small percentage?) of these engines with a HPFP gasoline leak and after these engines run with gasoline diluted oil washing all the bearing and interior surfaces the engines are simply disintegrating from the inside out. The current HPFP is a flawed design and should not be mounted on top of the engine where this could happen! There is a thread on here somewhere named "Check Your Oil Level" or something similar, it has some good info. The dealership service department clams up after this happens and they have obviously received some coaching to mark on the repair ticket NO ENGINE DAMAGE caught in time, no matter what evidence is presented by the poor ole screwed customer. Huge liability for GM and the GM leadership will take this secret to their graves if they can get away with it.  I NOW CHECK MY OIL LEVEL AT EVERY FILL UP ON THIS NEW 2018,  IF I SEE THE OIL LEVEL EVEN SLIGHTLY CREEPING UP,  IT WILL GO STRAIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY FOR A HPFP SWAP. Hopefully a redesign of the HPFP location came with the 2019 remodel?

Well this weekend, I will be taking a rubber hammer to the exhaust and heat shielding to see if anything rattles under impact.

If if I find anything I’ll report back. I was reading elsewhere, that the cat can disintegrate internally, and that this can cause a rattle.

Can anyone confirm if this issue went away after removal of their cats when installing a new exhaust system? I added a new system but it was cat back so the factory cats remained.

Did not go away with the installation of long tube headers and header back exhaust

Going on about fords being better and such.

It’s much better for topics to stay on point instead of turning into a pissing match.

Topics being on point can make it easy on readers now and 5 years down the road to read though these and stay on point with topic in hand.

RARELY on these forums do they go off track, majority of time they have great contributors and mods look after deleting useless posts.

The posts retaining basing gm, blah blah - should be removed. As should our posts talking about it lol

Just hope people see this and see a reminder to stay on point. These threads are viewed for YEARS and YEARS down the road.

Years and years later people will read through 24 pages of information to find absolutely nothing.

The tick is a faulty, non quality GM product. Back when Chevy was like a rock they were real trucks
after the bailout everything has been shit quality.

You could of owned 376 5.7 engines or 5.3 whichever but the older engines did not have afm. I don’t believe my truck will make it to 150k the ticking is getting worse each time I drive it, especially under load.

My 2014 Silverado is at 120,000 and running just as good as day one, not one issue with it.

I know there’s problems out there, but complaining to others saying “should of bought a ford” doesn’t help anyone lol this is what I’m trying to explain should stop.
