Second Break-in / Stolen, Time To Beef Up Security

This past weekend my 2006 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab was stolen right out of my driveway. It's been broken into before via the easily punched out door lock and/or handle. The first time a couple years ago they punched the entire door handle off, this time they just punched out the lock. Both times, they shoved a screwdriver into the ignition to attempt to start it (failing the first time and successful this past weekend). Luckily the truck was recovered, up on blocks minus the wheels (with the engine still running!).

 

I'm waiting on the adjuster to finish assessing the truck and have already found some more wheels on craigslist, but I to do everything I can to prevent this in the future. To that end, I'd like advice on the following:

 

  • Jimmi Jammers - http://www.jimmijammer.com/ - It looks like these plates behind the door handles will help prevent them from punching the lock cylinder out. Has anyone had experience with these?
  • Alarm systems - Everyone preaches Viper, which looks good. Are there any specific ones out there at are really good for my older truck? I definitely want the tilt sensor and I'd like smartphone integration somehow if possible (my truck does not have onstar though).
  • Kill switch - I really want some kind of nice hidden kill switch. I'm pretty good with electronics so I feel like I could do this myself, but just need advice on where to start, where's a good hiding place, and what wiring to cut into for it to be effective (so the thief can't just cut behind it and splice something together anyways). Basically the stock ignition switch is garbage and easily defeated with a screwdriver.

I also am upgrading the camera in my driveway so hopefully next time it can read the plates of the vehicle dropping off the thief.

It was my understanding that the lock cylinder is meant to pop loose. It's so if someone tries to force the lock, it breaks free so they can't access it. It saved my pickup from theft not long before I bought it.

 

The kill switch can be done any number of ways. I would think the easiest would be to put a switch or two on the ignition wire and hide it under the dash.

It was my understanding that the lock cylinder is meant to pop loose. It's so if someone tries to force the lock, it breaks free so they can't access it. It saved my pickup from theft not long before I bought it.

 

The problem is once they punch the lock out, they have access to the lock rods behind it and simply use those to open the door. These Jimmi Jammer plates both help secure the lock cylinder in place and also block access to the rods behind it.

Just wanted to answer my own question a little bit to help someone else. My trusty Haynes manual helped me find the fuel pump ground wire and I spliced a switch into it. I'd rather not say where I hid the switch, but it was a snap. The correct wire was the thicker of two black wires in the cable bundle running along the driver's side frame rail, and I spliced into it near the back seat area.

Yeah, an easy and sure fire way. They'd have to tow it or run a new fuel line, no fuel pump power and it's not going anywhere. You could always just pull the fuel pump relay/fuse also if you only need to do it occasionally. I did that when I had to park my car in a bad part of town one day for a few hours at work.(had co workers get their car stolen from that area)

I'd still like to also add a switch to the ignition as well. I see lots of people saying to use the passlock wire (yellow, in the steering column) but the thief that stole my truck bypassed that anyways somehow (not sure exactly what he did). I was thinking that, like the fuel pump power, it needs to be somewhere difficult to get to or at least more of a pain to find and bypass. Not sure where to find that yet though.

Place an inline switch in the throttle position sensor so that when the circuit is open the computer can't read where gas pedal is. It may start but it isn't racing away.

I had a Python (basically Viper) system with a two-way remote in my 03 Silverado. I really like it and the remote would chime and flash if it was in range and went off. They have a lot of features that can be added for a price. Cell phone remote, tilt for instance.

 

I have an Alpine remote in my SonomaGT. I swear that alarm has about almost every feature I could want but I don't if you can find them any more. The proximity sensor would go off with the rain hitting the windshield.

 

As for a kill switch, in my Camaro I put push button switch in-line with the ignition. I would have to hold the button down while turning the key to start it. I did this after my car was broken into and they tried to drive off with it. It worked so well that when I quit driving for 6 months I forgot how to start it while thinking about it. I had to let muscle memory come back to me to figure it out!

Rosedog - Sure the ignition switch is what I'd like to do. What I'm having a hard time with is where to do this? Which wire and where to splice into it.

 

And of course the jimmi jammers won't prevent a broken window, but I believe 90% of the time these trucks are stolen it's because they punch in the lock cylinder. I suspect many thieves don't want to be driving around with a broken window.

If they are just driving it to steal your rims and contents you better believe they will bust the window out.. At least now with the kill switch they will leave it on blocks in your driveway instead lol.

And of course the jimmi jammers won't prevent a broken window, but I believe 90% of the time these trucks are stolen it's because they punch in the lock cylinder. I suspect many thieves don't want to be driving around with a broken window.

I don't know what you have in the way of center console but you could put it under the dash, near the stereo, heck even in your door panel. As for the wire you'd need to cut just look in a chilton auto manual I guess, that's what I did.
