Best way to detail a truck

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I just picked up my 2014 Silverado 1500 a couple of weeks ago and have washed it a few times but it definitely needs a good clay bar session which I plan to do this weekend. My question is after I have done that, what's next?

I've read a lot of good things about Adam's Detail Spray so I may give that a try, but do I want to wax it first and then use that? Paint sealant?

What's everyone's recommendations as far as processes and products?

Thanks!

Clay polish seal wax

That's what I do. Shine starts with the prep (clay/polish)

Thanks Ryan!

Clay (Mother's Kit with Detail Spray which I'll use as clay lubricant) and Wax (Collinite 845) is on the way from Amazon. Any recommendations on Polish and Sealant? I've read great reviews on Meguiar's Mirror Glaze 2.0 so i was thinking that for polish.

There are some fine swirl marks I need to get rid of.

https://www.griotsgarage.com/ Go there and do a bunch of reading. This is some of the best stuff on the market today. Personally on a black vehicle, I clay bar, then polish, then wax, then wax again. Hand wash only and spray on wax after each wash. Keeps them shining and no swirl marks especially if you follow their directions.

thanks! Like I said I'm definitely clay barring this weekend, but since I don't have any polish yet should I wait to do it all at once? I now know that I do want to polish to really get that shine out of the wax... And spray wax after every wash... something like adams detail spray? How long will I go between actually waxing when using this?

i used "Rejex" sealant this spring. Seems to be working well. Amazon. Personally, i think most of these sealants come out of the same vat. If you look around, there are dozens of companies that sell paint sealant. I don't believe they all make their own. Come on guys, it's all polymers these days.

Forget the clay bar and check out the products by Nanoskin. I just started using this last week after seeing it recommended by Popular Mechanics:

http://www.nanoskinusa.com/collections/autoscrub-system/products/autoscrub-wash-mitt-fine-grade

I just completely did my Cadillac and am now starting on my truck. It replaces using a clay bar and it's much, much easier than a clay bar. And the results are the same as using a clay bar. If it's dropped on the ground, it can be simply rinsed off and it's ready to use again. The only thing to be careful about is to use lots of detail spray (I'm using up my Meguiar's but Nanoskin has their own) so the mitt glides smoothly over the paint surface.

After I used this, I waxed with Meguiar's Techwax 2.0. I'm quite satisfied with the results. No more clay bars for me. It costs about $41 on Amazon, but it sure is worth it.

Interesting, I will definitely try one out next time, since I already ordered the clay. But seems like its more for your money since its washable and reusable

I use both I find clay to work better especially on a vehicle that hasn't been flayed or it has been a long time between. The mitts seem to work well if the contamination is low

I used to do the show and shine circuit in my Vette back in the day and I was a fan of Mother's 3 step process. Cleaner, Polish and finally wax. If you take your time and do it right you won't regret it. A lot of brands have the same thing including Meguiar's and probably Adams. Fyi...I think the detail spray is just for quick touch ups and won't last long or offer much protection. Never did try the clay bar myself.

Adam's detail spray is basically used to remove light dust on a vehicle that was just washed and has sat a bit. There are plenty of companies that make an actual spray wax. I've used Meguiar's stuff for that.

One of the perks of getting older and realizing how many hours I spent shining my DD what ever it was, I now spends 20 bucks a month on an unlimited car wash. After a couple hours of driving the little haze covers the truck and you never know how many hrs where spent on it. Now if we're talking about the weekend toys that's different, pull it out of the garage rinse blow off detail once a year, DD not so much.
