Chevy aims to demonstrate F-150's aluminum bed is pathetic

Ford can fix this in future models. As these trucks get older though, I predict a lot of beds being replaced. Flatbeds, sheets of steel welded over the top.. ya know the stuff you find today on old wood bed trucks from the 60s and 70s.

 

I could see a profitable 3rd party market will surface. "Ford bed pan, not aluminum, for sale...."

Only problem with that is that you can't just weld in a sheet of steel.

People will use screws, caulking.. gorilla glue.. its gonna be ugly.

Um, no, plastic liners increase the occurrence of rusting in the bed. Not good. I personally have fallen in love with "Bed Rug" for liners, though I also coat the bed area too. That has proven to me to be the best over all protection. But even with all that, dings and dents do occur from the "careful" use I engage my truck with.

I've heard that a lot. But my old 1990 had one, and the bed pan was one of the few things that wasn't rusty. My 2006 has had one since new and there is no rust on it either.

Mine looked worse than that and no rust. But some parts were bare metal. And i lived in a coastal area for a couple years

You guys wouldn't believe how many times my toolbox full of concrete falls into the bed of my truck.

 

If I'm not fumbling around with a tool box, I'm dumping rocks into my bed from as high as possible.

A plastic liner wouldn't be an issue in the F-150 because the aluminum underneath wouldn't rust. Problem solved. [emoji1]

GM already did this once. It had no issues but it never was popular due to cost.

Finally got some time to watch the vids.

 

With the Ford you get your holes now. With Chevy you get them later. No difference IMO.

Wow.. I'm glad I dont park cab deep in salt every day.

 

No but seriously.. The salt thing is a big deal if you live up north and need a truck that isn't gonna turn to rust in 10 years. I Can totally understand that.

 

Down here though, if you see that kind of rust on a truck that isn't 30 years old.. well its from up north. Or.. its been buried axle deep at daytona beach for the last 10 years.

If you get 14 years out of your $60,000 truck up here, you're extremely lucky.

 

That pic of the cab corner is of a 2001 2500HD extended cab, taken in 2015. Wasn't much left of the rockers either. Rear half of the bed was rotting through too.
