How does Bluetooth work in truck

Recommended Posts

Usually when I am driving and a call comes in, it is routed through the radio.

Yesterday, just as I opened the door and was about to get in the truck I got a call on my cell phone. I answered it and got in the truck and started the engine to get the A/C going while I talked on the phone.

I ended the call and drove off.

About 5 min later I received a call and the Bluetooth in the truck did not pick up the call through the radio like it usually does.

Does the phone have to be not on a call when you start the truck in order for it to work through the radio?

Would I have to turn off the ignition and then restart the truck for it to pick up future calls?

Do you have bluetooth connected on your phone?

I have been on a call turned off the truck and blue tooth still worked. Once you open your door it disconnects. I believe you have to start your vehicle and it will pair with your phone (few mins). On the DIC a BLUETOOTH message (stays up for 3-5 seconds) will show up this means you are connected

Yes, it has always worked and I do see "Bluetooth" after I start the truck.

I don't remember seeing it at that time.

I wonder if it only connects if you are not on the phone when starting the vehicle?

I'm in a 16 Canyon..... My phone connects almost immediately as soon as I start the vehicle. I get a message on the DIC and/or the nav screen.

So - perhaps since you were on the phone, it didn't connect initially. So, I'm guessing.... it probably doesn't make another 'attempt' at connecting after you hung up. You'd probably have to go thru your settings to force a manual 'connection' (so to speak).

There are sooooo many weird things with this intellilnk setup. I don't think it's 'as refined' as it could be (or comparing other vehicles).

Mine normally takes a few mins to connect

I have been on the phone prior to starting my truck and a min or two after starting up it will switch to blue tooth from the phone

So today, I went to make a call while driving and my cell phone was not connected and I had to use the phone to make the call.

I checked the phone under the bluetooth settings and there is a General Motors paired device. So I select it and it connects.

I check to make sure it is working, this is while the truck is running at idle in park.

I drive off and the phone works fine through the radio like it should.

I stop the truck and leave the cell phone in the truck for about 5 minutes and come back and start the truck and the truck never shows "Bluetooth" in the DIC. So after a couple of minutes I try to make a call and it tries to route it through Onstar.

Something in the truck has changed to not search for Bluetooth devices anymore.

The manual says the following...

The in-vehicle Bluetooth system automatically links
with the first available paired cell phone in the
order the phone was paired.

Pairing should only need to be completed once,
unless changes to the pairing information have
been made or the phone is deleted.

The visibility timeout on my phone is set to 5 minutes....that is plenty of time.

The truck doesn't search for Bluetooth anymore....

Any ideas where to start to diagnose this?

I stopped by the local Chevy dealer and got someone who knew about Bluetooth systems and he thought it might have a problem with too many phones being paired to the radio so we deleted all the paired phones in the truck. Then we paired my phone and it seemed to work.

The next day, nothing worked.

When you say Bluetooth, and then say List, it is suppose to give you all the phones paired with the system and which one it is connected to.

It lists my phone and does not indicate it is connected to any phone. I can verify this by trying to make a call and it tries to use the Onstar. I don't have a phone plan with Onstar.

The truck will not indicate Bluetooth in the DIC window after starting the truck and the only way to use the Bluetooth is to go into my phone and select General Motors and my phone will try and connect with the truck. Some times it does and sometimes it doesn't.

Any ideas where to look for problems?

Have you tried to 'Forget device' and re- pair it? Go into your phone Bluetooth settings - click on the GM Intellilink and hit "Forget this Device". Then.....start the process all over again -by Pairing again.

Yes, we deleted the all the phones on the truck and deleted General Motors from the phone and re-paired with the code the truck gave.

After I start the truck, it is supposed to indicate Bluetooth in the DIC window and search for any phone paired with the truck. The truck just does not search for phones on its own anymore.

I don't necessarily always get a message on the DIC or my 8" screen either. But if I go to the Home Screen and Settings - Bluetooth settings, it'll show as 'paired'.

What phone are you using? If you're using an iPhone - press & hold on the voice command for like 5 seconds and see if SIRI comes up. Is she comes up..then you're paired.

At least, On my 2016 Canyon, I can talk to SIRI thru Bluetooth hands free.

I am using a Droid which has worked ever since I got it.

Every time I would start the truck, the truck would automatically search for any Bluetooth devices. In the DIC window it will say "Bluetooth".

It doesn't say that any more.

What I am finding is if I hit the Bluetooth button, the computer/truck will say "Ready". Then I say "Bluetooth".

Then the truck says "Bluetooth Ready". Then I say "List", and the the computer/truck will say something like...

"Ok, here is a list of all Bluetooth devices paired to this vehicle".....and what it is supposed to do is name every phone in the order that it was paired and if that phone is connected at that present time, so in this case it should say " Ron, Connected to,....then it will say "Returning to the Bluetooth menu"...

Since there is only one phone (Ron) paired with the truck, it says "Ron, returning to the Bluetooth menu", but it doesn't say it is connected.

So I stop the system, go into my Bluetooth settings on my phone and find "General Motors".

I tap that and it connects with the truck. After it connects to the truck, "Bluetooth" will show up in the DIC and if I go back to the menu listed above it will say...

"Ron is connected"

The truck is automatically supposed to connect with my phone and it isn't.

It is like the left mirror on my truck, I push a button and the mirror is supposed to fold in and out.....now it doesn't move at all. The right one quit while it was under warranty so that one is new, now the left one died. Well, that will be a fix of about $500.00. So I am not fixing it.

I guess this is another thing not working anymore and I am just going to have to take in and have them figure out what's wrong if I want to keep using the Bluetooth in the truck.

This will be the last post on this.

I think I have it figured out.

I made a post or two a while back about my dash flashing on and off.

What I think is happening is that there is a loose connection somewhere and it causes the dash to die and then restart again.

I believe the computer tells the DIC that it is checking for bluetooth and if the dash is going on and off, the computer thinks it checked but didn't make a connection due to the dash going on and off.

Yesterday and today in the morning, I started the truck and the dash did not act up and the Bluetooth showed up. That is how I think this is related.

I just need to get someone to go through the truck and check all the connections and make sure everything is tight and solid, and I think my problems will go away.

Thanks for the input.
