Homeade Ram Air

Recommended Posts

Looking to make/buy a ram air kit for my 2003 Silverado using stock airbox bottom. I do not have fog lights so there are blank spots where they go. Thinking of using the one on the passenger side to put scoop in.

I have read many different threads and most of them are old and links to pics. do not work. I have not found any pre-fab to buy.

Any pics. of kits you have made or ideas you have will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Go to a hardware store and purchase some dryer hose or any wide mouthed smooth inner diameter hose and some caulk/glue. Cut a hole in the bottom of the stock box, caulk up the hose and route it to fit behind the towhook or foglight and secure it down. Otherwise you can get a premade thing from volant for about $125.

I did it to my truck but I don't have pics any more, the guy who was hosting them for me let his account go. It's pretty simple really. Cut a 4" hole in the bottom of the air box using a 4" hole saw on a drill, reinstall the box and mark the hole out on the lower metal mounting plate. Remove both and use a saber or jig saw to cut the hole in the mounting plate, it's thick. I got the flex duct from Pepboys, it's black nylon and looks better than dryer hose but dryer hose will work. Reinstall the mounting plate and air box bottom and run the 4" duct up through the bottom of the air box. For the scoop, I used a 5x10 a/c register I got from Home Depot, it has a 4" round connection on the back of it you connect the 4" duct to. I trimmed mine at about a 45* angle to line up with the angle of the lower gray valance below the bumper. I put the scoop in the hole next to the passenger fog light, I wedge the top lip of it between the valance and the truck frame that's right there. Then I used a nylon stap with a velcro end and loop it over the frame and under the scoop and sinched it up like belt holding up your pants. Trim the 4" flex duct to the right length and connect it to the scoop, your done. Hope this helps!

Does this actually add Horsepower??

Does anyone have the dyno numbers to prove that it works? Maybe if you had a less restrictive exhaust on and then pushed more air on the front end you would have a bigger boost??

I don't know just full of stupid questions today.

Yes it works but I don't have any dyno numbers to back that claim up. I do have 0-60 timed runs and the ram-air mod on my truck was worth .2 seconds. There's also a definite SOTP gain, very good mod.

Yeah I have the Volant but don't have the scoop. I was told that the scoop doesn't fut the 4x4's because of the tow hooks. I could be wrong but that's what a supplier told me. But I still want to know about the rain and water in the filter.

Qiksilvr, the volant scoop will work with the 4wd's, i've seen the pics on another board. It fits right behind and kind of around the towhook.

JonesNTN, you can only tell if the original wheelwell induction is limiting by comparing dyno runs with that vs the towhook setup also. But you are right, you cannot dyno the exact gains unless you have a 70mph fan blowing straight at it to get that maybe .25psi boost.

I've got a Volant with the scoop on my 2003 Z71. I haven't seen any sign of water in the filter box but it does suck up alot of bugs. I wasn't too sure how much the scoop really helped, so I hooked up my scan tool and drove with the scoop on then drove with it off. The intake air temp with the scoop was 2 to 4 degrees higher than the outside air. Without the scoop the temp was 10 to 15 degrees higher and took much longer to cool down after being heat soaked. I was thinking about selling the scoop, but after seeing the difference in temps I'm going to keep it. If you just make an air duct to get fresh air to the filter it will be a big help. I don't think it has to be ram air, just a more direct route for outside air to get to the filter.
