Oil: Manual says 0W-20, Filler cap says 5W-30

Recommended Posts

You are saying that your owners manual for 2500 w 6.0 says 5w-30? Unless you are reading the wrong line you need to let GM know as that is a major typo. The online manuals show it correct.

I have a 2015 with the 6.0 and my owners manual is correct.

You might try downloading your owners manual online to get a correct one. Section 10-12 of my 2015 Sierra 2500 manual says 5w-30 for the 6.0 (and the 4.3L).

I don't think folks know that the manual covers the range of 1500's on up thru 3500's. That is why it shows the oil for the 4.3L, 5.3L, 6.2L and 6.0L. Dmax is a supplement to the manual. My manual shows all these engines oil recommendations, fuel recommendations, etc.

Doesn't really matter to me. My 2015 2500 6.0 has been getting a synthetic 10w30, as does my 2006 Cadillac CTS 3.6L and my 2013 semi truck (though that is a diesel rated version). Not like I live in Calgary in the winter. I have become more sold on 10w30 for a variety of applications as it tends to be less volatile (lower NOACK rating), and more resistant to shearing as it needs less viscosity improvers to get the job done. It tends to keep a more consistent, level viscosity throughout the oil change interval.

Right from the 2015 Owner's Manual (I checked mine as well as I have an early 15 HD and it matches this):

Viscosity Grade

Use SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines. Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade for the 4.3L V6, and 6.0L V8 engines.

Cold Temperature Operation: In an area of extreme cold, where the temperature falls below −29 °C (−20 °F), an SAE 0W-30 oil may be used in the 4.3L or 6.0L engine. An oil of this viscosity grade will provide easier cold starting for the engine at extremely low temperatures.

When selecting an oil of the appropriate viscosity grade, it is recommended to select an oil of the correct specification. See “Specification” earlier in this section.

The 2014 book matches as well :http://www.chevrolet.com/content/dam/Chevrolet/northamerica/usa/nscwebsite/en/Home/Ownership/Manuals_and_Videos/02_pdf/2014-silverado-1500-owners-manual.pdf
