Tire question for towing

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I'm new here been searching around and can't seem to find exactly the answer I'm searching for. I am getting down to needing tires I am currently running 275/70/18 on hankook dyna pro ATM.

I found a set of the factory optional 20 inch wheels Powder coated black they look awesome lol. Anyways and doing some math figured out that 305/55/20 would be the exact same height as my current set up but be about 1.2" wider. Looking at BFG ko2 For either size.

My question is this would I be just fine towing with the 20s losing a little bit of sidewall. Plan on picking up a toy hauler camper down the road. I've pulled an 11,000 pound horse trailer with my hankooks and the tires or truck didn't even break a sweat. Running a 2011 2500 with 6.0.

Just double check the weight rating of your new tires, but you should be fine. Those 305/55/20's might ride a little more firm than your 275/70/18's, but they'll probably be more stable under a load.

It rides like shit now lol I didn't get a 3/4 for the ride. But they are 3195 per tire I believe. The 18 inch tires are 3495. So about 600 pounds total. Which doesn't seem to terrible.

Even with the tires rated at 3195lbs you are still limited to the 6200lb rar. Just how large of a toy hauler are you looking at? TT or 5ver? If a large 5ver you may be pushing the limit on the tire/axle rating depending on the model.

We have the factory 20's, still running the crap GY SRA. Havent noticed or felt any issues towing our 32 BHDS with ~1400lbs tw.

To bad your not closer as I have seriously considered switching to the factory 18" for a better tire selection. Very limited 20" selection to go to a little larger tire like a 275/60 (haven't found an LR E).

Please post a pic of the 20's if you do get them!!! I have also considered black for ours also, or a dark grey.

Good luck!!!

Yes I towed with the SRA's the only issue was they sucked on wet grass and dry pavement lol.

I have Goodyear Duratrac now they have a better tow ratting then the stock SRA's and I defiantly have no issues with wet grass, or snow or mud or sand ha ha...

I am gonna get BFGs or dick cepek fun countries. It would be a big TT toy hauler no 5er at this time. Lots of tire options in the 305/55/20 size. Just be a little wider but I have room for width I just can't go any taller unless I level it.

Alright guys I went with 275/65/20 bfg it is a 34 inch tire. Very slight rub on drivers side at full lock turning left. Trimmed mudflap a bit and its all good. Retained lots of sidewall. As well. They are E rated tires and can run 80psi.
