bosro what did you use to disable the AFM? Custom tune, handheld tuner or range?

No tune....I don't believe the tranny or rear end are going to last and want absolutely no issues with warranty if this does occur.

I trust GM about as far as I can throw a fat salesman! :)

I went with this....

Bit pricy but considering I contemplated getting rid of truck and taking a beating it's cheap.

I notice no change in mpg from disabling AFM....just a happier driver.

Well... I am custom tuned with HP that is a dyno tune I keep tweaking. My only complaint with my 8 speed is the shift from park delay and otherwise it's fine. I set it back to stock and took it in the other day to a dealer I have no association with. They are ordering the parts and will perform the tranny tsb... It's a powertrain complaint and no doubt they checked the trucks software... warranty still here lol. It's a lot more fun tuned than with that waste of money range thing lol.

Just had my transmission updated with the new program. No more clunking after the truck sits overnight when shifting in to drive or reverse.... for now.

What drivetrain? 5.3 and 6 speed? That's what I got and would definitely like an update lol

I did extensive measurements on my '07, and disabling AFM had NO EFFECT what-so-ever on fuel economy (in real world driving). Interesting to see that this apparently holds with the later models as well.

I am pretty darn sure the AFM was developed strictly to assist on the EPA testing cycle to establish fuel economy numbers. I am pretty sure that AFM eeeks out a few fractions of an mpg number on that cycle. In real world driving, probably makes no difference what-so-ever.

I will say that on my 2016, it's a heck of a lot smoother and refined than it was on my '07. My '07 sounded like it was passing gas when it went into 4, especially with a flowmaster. Turned it off very quickly after hearing that... LOL

Ben,

What program for the 8-speed? I have a 2017 coming in September. Is there a software update that needs to be performed on the transmission?

Regards,

John

It was a software update, unfortunately I don't know what the update was. I'm sure on the new trucks GM is putting out they will have the new software installed is my assumption.

Sucks to hear that some of you guys are having issues with your trucks. I hope you can get your issues fixed, and if not, get a solution that works for you.

2015 6.2/8spd

9/15 build date

3,081 miles.

I didn't drive slower than 55 on the 600 mile trip home, but I did not use cruise control. Accelerated and decelerated like a buffoon.

Drive it like a 25 year old with a lead foot who bought it with the 6.2 being one of the big selling points :D

Getting better about stopping, but occasionally have those THROW OUT THE ANCHOR WE STOPPIN' moments

I FREAKING LOVE THIS BEAST!

I've averaged high 22s on mixed highway and interstate driving 4 times.

4 cylinder mode is imperceptible (at least for me).

The 6.2 is a freaking hoot to drive. Step on it and I get moving, STOMP on it and I'm in low earth orbit.

And this transmission is NUTS! Glass smooth up through the gears. The only way I can tell it's shifting is by the pause in engine sound (knock on wood). It always seems to be in just the right gear. The grade braking is nice too. Kinda takes its time hehehe, but it works great and is just as smooth going down as it is going up (knock on more wood).

No clunks (still knocking), no herky jerky stuff, no problems at all. Granted, if I'm coasting and I give the gas a short jab it will jolt forward (as if being awoken), but no clunks or anything. And any car I've done that in has done the same thing.

I remember being worried about the AFM and the 8 speed when I was looking at getting one of these. In retrospect, I'm not sure why. This combination is kick butt. :chevy::D

I am on most major GM forums.. actually all of them lol. It's not that big of a complaint in the grand scheme. They are not a perfect tranny... kind of like the 6 speed still isn't nor ever will be. Some are worse than others and some people just complain about everything lol.

My truck developed the vibration and it would shutter while shifting so I took it in to my dealer for the oil change and went over it with them a few weeks ago. They tested the torque converter slippage and said that was my problem. They replaced it just before a big trip from FL to MI and just over 3000 miles. It's like driving a completely new truck. There is Zero vibration and the little bit of clunking (usually only when shifting into drive from park) I had is gone.

On another note. I got 21.1 mpg over all which included driving 75-77 on the interstate, letting my bro-in-law pull his boat some in NC and around the towns in our destinations.
