So I am not going crazy!

One day at work, I thought I saw some guy walking through the parking lot carrying what looked like a steering wheel. I wasn't sure that is what he had so I ignored it.

A couple of weeks later, I saw someone walking by my office window carrying a steering wheel, and thought that was odd, maybe someone upstairs is selling steering wheels?

So yesterday I hear someone coming down the stairs outside my office and as the person goes by my window heading for the parking lot, he has what looks like a steering wheel he is carrying.

So I mention it to my boss and we are discussing it, and the suggestion came up maybe he takes the steering wheel off the car so no one will steal it. I thought that rather odd, but in today's world.....who knows!

This morning leaving my office, I see the maintenance man cleaning up and tell him, about this guy I think I keep seeing carrying a steering wheel. He says, yes, he has seen him, he takes it off so no one will steal his car while he is doing business with an office upstairs.

I couldn't believe it! So I am not as far gone as some people might think. :)

I guess that is cheaper than fixing whatever would allow his car to be stolen so easily.

Anyone have any odd stories like that?

Reminds me when I was watching an episode of "Counting Cars" and the owner of the shop (Danny) stopped to look at a guys rat rod. He said he had to go get the steering wheel and I think Danny said something about so nobody steals it I guess. It's not uncommon to have a detachable steering wheel like a race car has because people either does it to stop someone from stealing it and also the way some people build a custom car they may even need it so they can just get in or out like you would in a race car. It's not even that hard to do, at least with a vehicle that doesn't have an airbag in the steering wheel.

in my 80s subaru, being five foot 9 is like being 8 foot 6 to a gmc.

I wanted the removable wheel just for the 6 inch space it gave it.. I could put my seat back all the way then.

my left foot still hits the brake and clutch at the same time..but hey. :)

I found a spacer instead...and my car buggy starts with more than a key. one has to know the car to get it going..

Was a popular mod in the 80's. Airbags killed it.

Seriously? I bought (mostly traded - but hey it was the eighties) at least 5 new cars between 1980 to 1990 and I don't even remember aftermarket / dealer selling a kit to do this. I remember stereos with CD players that came with handles so you could pull them out and easily/or barely carry them. God, I'm getting old.

Not discounting anything that you said. Maybe I was just really busy in the '80s and don't remember. Anyway nostalgia and curiosity have got the best of me. Could you explain further about the '80s removable wheels. Interested how it was engineered. It must have had some sort of quick disconnect, yes? Did it require (any) tools etc.etc. Share what you know please.
