BBQ & Good Eats Nashville-Memphis-New Orleans

Spurshot

Recommended Posts

I'm taking a road trip from Nashville to New Orleans in a few weeks. I'm making a list of great places to eat along the way. Your recommendations are welcomed.

For Memphis, I have Germantown Commissary, Central BBQ, Cozy Corner, and The Pig.

TIA

Those Memphis eateries you listed are what I would list.

For Nashville, Hermitage Cafe, The Pharmacy, Arnold's Country Kitchen, and Martin's BBQ are my favorites when I'm over that way.

For New Orleans, Commander's Place, The Joint, Ruby Slipper's Cafe and Camellia Grill are the best places I can recall.

In Nashville:

Puckett's Grocery - They have one in Franklin, TN (about 20 mile South of Nashville and also one downtown now)

Loveless Cafe - my favorite place to eat breakfast. Get there before 8-9am or you'll wait an hour easy

If you are staying in or around downtown Nashville, there are a lot of really good places. There are a lot of the farm-to-table type places here too.

The Southern

Etch

Kitchen Notes - another great breakfast place with awesome buffet

Merchants

A good local place that is pretty low-key is SATCO (San Antonio Taco Company). It's texmex and has a large outdoor deck. Good tacos and buckets of beer.

I live in Nashville so if you have any other questions about places to eat, just ask.

I had some good eats at Jack's BBQ downtown yesterday.

Loveless was a feast with good fried chicken.

Monell's off of Murfreesboro Pike by the airport was a family style dinner. Pretty decent.

Just an update on my BBQ crawl. In downtown Nashville, Jack's BBQ on Broadway was pretty good pork ribs. None went to waste. Nice dry style with a great dry rub, which I acquired a container of for my home BBQ. http://jacksbarbque.com

Just a warning for anyone headed to Lynchburg to see the Jack Daniel distillery tour, which was great, but steer clear of the local BBQ joint in Lynchburg named BBQ Boxcar. Just steamed ribs, no smoke or rub. It was crap.

In Memphis, we hit several BBQ joints. First was Germantown Commissary out in Germantown. Excellent ribs. Moist, a tangy rub, good bark, good bit of hickory smoke this part of the country is known for.. Nice Memphis style sauces. Next was Central BBQ downtown. Our sis-in-law was chicken to go the original on Central so we went to the tourist trap. OK BBQ, light on smoke and bark. Probably "Texas crutched" (foiled for a while). Jim Neeleys Interstate BBQ on 3rd near E Mallory had some excellent ribs and rib tips. Great bark and rub, nice smokiness that just wraps around the meat. Almost as good as Germantown commissary. Later we hit The Pig on Beale. I was not holding a lot of hope for them, but they served me a full slab of one of the best dry rubbed ribs of the trip. I was so impressed I asked the waiter for a look-see at the smoker and a chat with the pit master. They had a high end rotisserie fuels by wood. 7 hrs for ribs at 225. These ribs had it all, great rub, bark, smoke, and moist.

In Vicksburg, MS, we had dinner at a historic B&B/cafe called Anchuca. Nice steak and great atmosphere for a quiet dinner for two.

Yes we went there this afternoon. We took 27 thru Utica to I-55. We're in New Orleans tonight. Just came back from Bourbon street.
