GMC headlight reflectors - legal to remove them?

Recommended Posts

I live in California. Does anyone know if it is legal here to remove the orange reflector from the headlight? I am wanting to do that combined with clear corners but I don't need any tickets due to appearance. Thanks

Im not sure whether or not it is 100% legal to remove the orange lense but I think that is you replace it with a yellow bulb you should be fine. Im sure there is a catch somewhere that they could use but there are plenty of vehicles that come stock with clear headlights and yellow or amber bulbs. I had clear headlights and corners on my 97 silverado with hyper white bulbs that looked blue with the lights off and never caught any heat for it, but maybe i was just lucky.

hope some of that helps

I would be careful on that one. NHTSA is in the process of looking at all this suff.

I was on the phone with my rep from CATZ lighting and talked for about a hour about lighting. They can no longer import HID kits and after the big lawsuit against APC you are going to see a big crack down on modifying factory lighting on cars.

As long as you use street legal lighting, DOT approved, you should not have an issue with making the modification. The reason the HID lighting is not allowed is because they need a different reflector, you can't just replace the bulb. You can actually get a legal HID replacement kit from Sylvania and legal replacement signal bulbs, the new Silverstar signal lighting on their website. The new SilverStar signal looks silver but when lit it is the legal amber color.

You will probably see the Sylyania kits removed to as NHTSA is looking at there kits to. If you go on NHTSA sight you will find the info on it.

My distributor stopped carring them because of what is possibly going to happen.

NHTSA just might make the manufatures recall all the HID kits because they are non compliant lighting
