when to flush?

Recommended Posts

My 2002 monte carlo turned 30000 miles and my service dept. tells me that I need to flush the antifreeze, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. Are these really necessary at so few miles? I thought dex cool was good for 5 years/150000? and have driven well over 200000 miles on power steering fluid on other vehicles. what are your thoughts?

coolant and p.s., NO, brake fluid, only if it has absorbed too much moisture(i have test strips where i work to test for excesive moisture. brake fluid has the ability to absorb and dispeerse moisture to a certent content, but if yours is an '02, i highly doubt it is even started absorbing any moisture yet.)

the tranny fluid, wait till about 50-60K to flush, cause if your planning on kepping the monte for a while, its good p.m.( i tell customers to look at it this way, do you want to spend 120 bucks now for a tranny flush, or $2500 for a new tranny later!

at this point, dont worry about anything but the oil!!

I agree. No need to worry with them. The brake fluid I would do a flush when you do new brake lining, at least that is when I plan on doing mine.

As for the power steering fluid. Yep they last a long time and you hardly hear about it having any problems at all. But me being picky and for what it cost me for a quart of synthetic P.S. fluid, I just sucked out of the system what I could with at turkey baster and filled it back up with fresh. Not hard to do, not expensive and a piece of mind that I got fresh fluid in there where it still gets hotter than heck in the summer and keeps fresh fluid on the seals as well. But then that is just me and my .02
