How can GM get away with this???

Recommended Posts

How can GM install a P rated tire on a light duty truck, my friend bought a dodge and the truck has LT tires....... Both are Goodyear Wrangler's. What's your take on this issue????

P = When a tire size begins with a "P," it signifies the tire is a "P-metric" size that was designed to be fitted on vehicles that are primarily used as passenger vehicles. This includes cars, minivans, sport utility vehicles and light duty pickup trucks (typically 1/4- and 1/2-ton load capacity). The use of P-metric sizes began in the late 1970s and they are the most frequently used type of tire size today.

I love my truck riding nice with my bridgestone duelers. I'm sure there are some options for the "real truck" owners

For most of us with 1/2 ton trucks, LT tires are overkill. A P tire is cheaper, has a better ride and I prefer the look of the sidewall with a set of 20's.

Every half-ton sold today comes standard with P-metric tires. I believe if you order the max tow package you might get LT tires. Your friend's Dodge is probably equipped with a similar package. Go stop by a dodge dealer and look at a new Ram 1500, $100 says it'll have P tires. Ford too.

for 99% of owners, the P tires are fine. I'm at 42k and when my OE Wranglers wear out I'm switching over to LT275/65R18 BFG AT's. Yes they're E rated... only tire they offer in that size. Toyota put that exact tire on their Tundra TRD Pro for a 4wheeler review and they drove a lot on the hwy with it.

This isn't something new. My 2005 f150 had p rated Michelin tires as did my 2002 silverado goodyear wrangler st. It's always been if you wanted an actual tire that could be used offroad or handle significant towing one of your first stops out of the dealership would be the tire shop.

Thanks for the reply's guys, where I live I use the truck in woods for hunting a bit and I was told that P tires aren't made for the abuse of rocky dirt roads. Coming back to my buddy dodge, the tires are LT and a more aggressive thread. Truck has hemi and just a plain truck with tow package, a well I ordered a 16 crew cab LTZ and will have to put BFG's LOL.

Again thanks GH

Yeah I've seen P tire sidewalls get sliced open by sharp sticks along offroad trails. Even sharp rocks will pop a P-tire. LT tires sacrifice weight/ride quality for a much more robust tire construction. They're a good choice for guys that tow with their trucks too.

LT tires are complete overkill on a 1500 unless you frequently overload your truck or go off-road. P tires can carry more weight than we're supposed to haul. LT tires are better at withstanding sidewall punctures when off-road.

I've always bought P rated tires over the last 11 years until this time. The only reason I got LT tires this time was because they weren't much more price wise compared to the P series tires.

Nope I ordered my truck and made it with the max tow package.. comes with the crappy 20 inch lsa goodyears. It's crazy that my 295/35/24's ride is much better. I know hard to belive but it's the truth
