The $2,695 Question: Do I Really Want The 6.2L?

Recommended Posts

Yeah I agree, it's a lot of arguing that strongly resembles ego,and self justification of their purchase. I view the 6.2l as just a better, bigger version of the 5.3l which is a great engine in itself. As far as price I agree too. A base ltz,or slt with a 6.2l isn't much more than a loaded lt.

Agreed. When I was looking for my 2015 I found a really basic LTZ double cab with a 6.2 in it. It had no options beyond being an LTZ and Z71. Most 5.3 powered LT'S that had the more up level interior had as high or higher MSRP. I would have preferred cloth myself but I do like my truck now that I have it lol.

Man, seems like the 5.3 (or 4.3) and 6.2 guys don't get along lol. I owned a 14 5.3 and thought it was a great engine, far better then the previous versions and plenty of power for a DD. My 15 is a 6.2 and I love it. Will admit sometimes it's hard to stomach paying for 93 when some stations ask a while $1 more for 93 vs 87. 6.2 has much better driving dynamics and gets the exact same mpg as the 5.3.

Personally I wish I could have gotten an LT with the 6.2, but guys who are saying 10k for LTZ and 6.2 don't line up with my experience. All the basic options on the LT with a 5.3 are close to base LTZ price.

Anyway, can't go wrong with either, but whatever way you go, I would highly recommend the 8 speed.

Had an AFM '10 5.3L w/ 6spd. Opted for the 6.2L then, but my sales guy talked me out of it for "fuel mileage reasons". Traded it on on a '15 6.2L Dbl cab 6.5bed and get considerably better fuel mileage. Combined I run about 17 with 33x12.5R20 E loads (was 19 with stock tires), my friends '16 5.3L Dbl cab 6.5bed with a 305/55R20 E load gets 16.5mpg and my co worker reports his '14 5.3 CC 6.5bed is about 16.5 with Flowmaster muffler and flapper delete. They run 87 though vs 91 in the L86, so they still win in the end. Power gains are definitely noticeable, tows my trailer like a dream, will blow the doors off a pony car at the stop lights.

I have the gasbuddy app, always looking for the best price. I work in petroleum and know about all the gas stations in my area so many of the cheaper ones, well...you get what you pay for. I will admit I run 87 or even 89 in my 6.2 on rare occasions when I know all I am going to be doing is highway. But I keep that in my head and dont ever romp on it in those times, which makes you feel a 4.3 could have sufficed!
