Headlight Illumination Issues

Recommended Posts

Just purchased a 2015 Sierra z71 a month ago and am not impressed with the lights. So let me get this straight if it was produced after feb of 2015 it should have the new headlights in it from the factory? My 2009 Chevy had way better lights.....

I had my bulbs replaced last week and the BCM update done. I now notice that the outside temperature reading is not reading the right degrees. Over on the Duramax Forum they are saying the IPC needs a software update also. Has anyone noticed that their outside temperature is off? Mine is off by about 5 degrees and was always right on before the BCM update.

Got my update done today, my temp is off now too. If fluctuates from 6 degrees high to 2 degrees high. I think I'll leave it alone and keep driving it and see if it works itself out. Any luck with yours resolving itself?

Dealer called me today and said to bring it back. They think they have a solution but didn't get into details. I take it back next Tuesday.

only took a week for the bulbs to come in to my dealership. everything was followed per the TSB and the invoice shows the work done. I haven't been able to drive it anywhere but in the city, but I can definitely tell the lights are much whiter than before. How are yall checking the temperature differences between actual temps and what the truck is reading? Thanks!

I'm checking mine against the weather channel and the Apple app. But to be honest I never really paid attention to the temp before the bcm flash so I am not sure if it was off before or not. It is off sometimes but other times is about right on since I had it done. The way I look at it is, the dealer got the right bulbs, had them aimed right when I picked it up and had the air box secured so if my temp is a little off I still came out with a win! Plus I'm in FL and there's not a whole lot of difference between 92 degrees and 95 degrees, it's all hot!

Not necessarily a good test. Weather Channel, for example, may only be estimating the temp in your town based on weather stations they are gathering information from coming from neighboring towns.

You would be better suited to use Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) and actually look to see where their weather stations actually are. Temp can vary in my town up to ten degrees from one corner to another because of elevation differences, and TWC doesn't even have a weather station in my town - they're usually close, but almost never "right".

Honestly, you need to have a thermometer near the truck to be able to compare it to the temperature gauge of the truck. Checking the weather station and your truck is most likely going to be off 5-7 degrees just by location, exposure to truck heat and environmental factors. That's just my opinion though.

Like I said, not too concerned about it. There are so many varying factors and I know the apps can be off based on location. I rarely look at the temp on the truck anyway. Here in florida it's either hot or a "nice day" and I can gauge that by the seat of my pants so to speak. Appreciate the insight though guys!

I just picked my truck up yesterday with a build date of April 1st. The first thing I checked under the hood besides a pre scope of how to do a catch can and the block heater cord location, was the bulbs. I looked and they are 12v 55w Phillips 9012 bulbs.

I contemplated HIDs from the get go but I may give this a shot first.

The build dates on that bulletin are quite flawed by the looks of it. Will get the wheels in motion to have it looked at I guess.

UPDATE: Apparently the local dealer carries the vosla bulbs in stock, I can have them put in for free as I expected/hoped. But with some of the stories here I wondering if I should just pick them up and do it myself. They said the BCM flash has already been applied as per the VIN. I honestly have yet to take it out in the dark as it doesn't get reasonably dark until around 11pm here.

Just had my bulbs replaced on Thur after waiting a week for them to come in to my dealership. They are much better and do produce more light. Someone had posted an actual dealer bulletin on here somewhere however I cant find it now but I did print it. I will try and figure out how to post it here again tomorrow so if anyone needs it they can print it and bring it to their dealer. I talked to the tech. that did my lights and he said that my truck was the first one that he has done. Nothing else seems to be affected on my truck from the voltage increase on the computer.

My bulbs showed up this morning, and I had them installed this afternoon. I also purchased two extra bulbs--I don't look for these to show up at Autozone anytime soon!

The bulbs were adjusted close, but not to my liking for my rural roads. I spent about an hour on the road and finally got them absolutely correct.

The difference is quite good, about how they should be when compared against older trucks. Reaches out and touches very well, lateral illumination is very good. Light spill over into dead zones, such as when going around a curve, is very good.

I find the illumination to be average and it compares very well against my 2011 GMC. I no longer feel uneasy when driving this truck at night. No excuse for customers to go through all of this. Shameful--it was very dangerous.
