Headlight Illumination Issues

Recommended Posts

Strange I'd say that the headlights are pretty good in my 14 Silverado, the fogs fill in the area close to the truck and high beam range is good. I run an LED on the front to get better light spread up the road when driving rural roads but unlike my firneds Ram the reach was fine without I just wanted a wider beam to see deer and moose on the side before they ran in front.

The Silverados are not the topic of discussion in this thread, only the Sierras with their projector beams. The basic Silverados still have good headlamps.

GM CUSTOMER SERVANTS: Are you reading your customers comments/complaints? Are you doing anything about it, suggest you elevate this to those who are supposed to give a "crap" about their customers you know the ones who pay your salary. I know that as far as the 14/15s are concerned I'm sorry your not happy with your headlights we appreciate your inputs perhaps we can improve them in the future. Blah, blah, blah!

Well after owning my Sierra for 1 week, I finally did some backroads rain nighttime driving, and all I can say is wow these really are bad, I read up on them before the purchase and expected them, but this is even worse then expected, I don't understand the logic, how could they not know these headlights were marginal at best compared the the last 2 generations of trucks, I desperately hope they come up with something on this, after X-mas I will be typing up a nice email and firing it as many places as I can, I did find a slight difference in dimming the radio screen, but then u cant read your cluster and speed, otherwise I adore this truck so far

You know they are reading these, but they have never even acknowledged the lighting issue threads, afaik. Never seen it anyways.

Their silence on the lighting issues speaks volumes! They don't have a fix, or never intended to have a fix.

Please prove me wrong GM!

The true problem lies in the bulbs, not the headlight/projector.

HIDs in the projector of a Sierra make a world of difference. Temperature color also makes a huge difference. After running a few sets in my 14 Sierra, I'm satisfied with 35w HID(digital ballasts) running 4300K bulbs. I have V-LED fogs(850 lumens/each) at the moment that compliment them fairly well, but have the rigid fog light conversion waiting to be installed.

Like mentioned in the early posts, aiming the projector at the right height is crucial. I believe the "correct" GM method is 2-3" above the point of projection at a 20' distance. I'd suggest going a little bit lower and even be level or 1" below the projection height to avoid driving oncoming traffic insane. The key is finding level ground - and taking into account any suspension/tire mods etc.

I know there are tons of threads on this topic already. I complained much like everyone else to GM Canada. Apparently GMC released a new OEM light or bulb for the GMC sierra with projectors this week.

My dealer has ordered a set for me and another guy.

I will keep everyone posted with updates, part numbers etc.

Here's hoping it will work, as I just ordered a Morimoto HID retrofit kit.

the fix is a different bulb, and i believe the pcm flash will give that bulb a little extra voltage. i'm surprised they already have it out to dealers yet but if you wait a bit longer it will probably be more widely available

It'll be interesting. German means Osram to me. I'm wondering if it's going to be another HIR bulb similar to the 9011 upgrades we've been doing here. Maybe a LED? That might explain the BCM flash.
