Done Any Detailing and/or Paint Protection?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has done any Detailing and/or Paint Protection or paint work to their trucks?

If so how is it to work with? Does it polish well? What Products did you use?

I have been thinking about using some of the Chemical Guys products with the Jet Seal Pait Protection to leave me with the glossy look for months to come.

After using waxes and polished for years, I went a different route and glass coated my truck with 22PLE. Its been about 4 months now, driving through the salt and calcium chloride of a new england winter and it still beads up and shines better than any wax Ive used over the years. Long process but highly recommend. Also had an XPEL clear bra put on the front, best money I've ever spent.

But, I use Klasse car kit paint sealant from AutoGeek.com, P21S Carnauba wax. Sealant is supposed to last 6-12 months and 6 months in still looking good, probably will end up doing it every fall and spring.

Haven't detailed my truck yet, that's coming next weekend, but some quick general rules to think about...

1) Lots of brand loyalty among detailing products, but many different lines are good...no one company has the secret magic in a bottle. I stick with Meguiars...just use a reputable product line and you can't go wrong.

2) Don't polish without claying first. Claying removes the junk that's bonded to your car, if you polish over that you risk adding new swirls and marks. If you've never clayed before, it's really very easy.

3) What polish to use is less about product line and more about how much cut you need. If you're just trying to remove some light swirl marks, Meguiar's Ultimate Polish or #9 Swirl Remover 2.0 is a great polish. If you need something more aggressive, you could step up to #80 or #83 Dual Action Cleaner/Polish.

4) Some will disagree, but you will be MUCH more effective polishing with a DA polisher than by hand.

Personally I can't wait to detail my truck and see how good I can get tungsten metallic looking! Good luck and post pics when you're done!

Also with Adam's you can call them, they will walk you over the phone on what steps and products to use. They are a forum sponsor, I have been using their products for years now with great success.

Adams Polish and Griots garage. Really depends on machine, pad, and product that will dictate outcome and how long it takes. I use the Griots orbital, their new BOSS correcting cream(which finishes down perfectly), and the orange correcting pads. I was using the Adams correction and it works very well too, but I since changed to the above and have a bit quicker and nicer results. I also like using the Adams Quick Sealant for a quick, easy, and solid protection as well as the Griots PolyGlass wax. Good luck!

I will do a claybar and sealant about twice a year. I use Chemical guys JetSeal.

And I will wax the truck about 3-4 times a year with Chemical Guys butter wet wax.

Keeps the truck looking good.

What do you black truck owners use to get the best finish and protection??

In my experience (I don't own a black vehicle but have detailed a few), you pretty much have to do a glaze before sealing and waxing or a black vehicle will show you its swirl marks.

Trying to get all the oponions I can I just bought a 15 ltz crew can it had 3k miles on it it just looks like there are some fine scratches in the clear nothing to worry me yet but I threw a coat of wax on it I just didn't know if I should do anything before that with the vehicle being that new. Deffinatly open to feedback and suggestions..

So, that's the nature of the beast with black...when it's cleaned up and properly detailed, nothing looks better. But, it will show you it's imperfections a lot more readily.

My advice would be to clay it, and then use a very low-cut polish like Meguiar's Ultimate Polish with a DA polisher. Then, seal and wax. if you think you might need a more aggressive polish than that, you could always take a good close-up picture that shows the scratches you are talking about, and email it to a rep at Meguair's, Adams, etc. I know at Meguiar's you'll get a rep who can give you a good recommendation on just how much cut you actually need from your polish.

But, the bottom line...with black, you really can't just wash & wax without any steps between or it will show swirl marks. Just my two cents, others may disagree...
