2016 ignition switch

Is it just mine?

I have only driven the truck a half dozen times but when I turn the key to start it, the key stays in the start position (by itself) until the engine starts, then releases (by itself)

Is this something new or is it my first defect?

After almost 2 years I haven't noticed this, but I also keep it in the start position until it starts. I'll have to try this tomorrow.

By the way, why do you say "first defect"? Makes it sound like you bought the truck knowing it will give you problems yet you bought it anyways. Really no need to feel negative about the truck unless it's actually giving you problems. You also can't go by the % of people and comments on a forum. A lot of negative questions will be from someone joining because they have a problem, not because they're truck hasn't given them any problems and want to tell everybody. I've had my truck since very late April of '14 and has a little over 23,500 miles with 0 problems or issues.

+1... GM must be one powerful brand... How great for them..... Think about it, the buyers are convinced before hand the trucks are junk, but still buy them! lol...

In all seriousness.. remember there are millions of these trucks on the road now. The big big majority don't have any major issues.

Ya that's what people need to realize is that no matter how many on a forum are having problems that's not a good measuring stick to what % of these trucks have problems. Most isn't on forums and with how many of these trucks are on the road it's easily a small fraction of 1% that actually give any problems.

Tried mine and it does it. Never noticed since I just hold the key in the start position until it starts. I guess that's "old school" now. I'm thinking it has something to do with the remote start system or maybe it has nothing to do with it at all.

Speaking of Ignition my brother has a 2015 Silverado Lt and when you turn the ignition key to run(but don't actually start the vehicle) then turn the key to the off position the truck engine turns over and then shuts off. He says he as a friend that has the same situation happen. He asked me to try it on my 15 gmc sierra denali and mine does not do it. Has anyone here seen or heard about issues like this?? Anyone know a potential cause?

Haven't heard of that problem before. There's been many times where I've been waiting in my truck and after the 10 minutes the radio and everything cuts off so I turn the key to the run position to turn the radio back on. Never had it start unless I turn the key all the way to the start position or do a remote start.

Well I know there is an accessories key turn and then a run key turn then the final turn before the motor turns over. He is going past the accessories function to the run function but never turns the truck over. In that setting you can hear the fuel pump run charging the line but he never bumps the key to turn the motor over. Then when he goes and turns the key to the off position the motor turns on and then shuts right off. He has talked with a service writer at our local dealership and has not heard anything back but has not actually taken the truck in to have it looked at.

My key does not stay in position. Itll go back to the Run position soon as I let go however the starter will continue to turn over til it starts.

OP is saying the key physically stays in Start position til it starts then goes back to Run on its own? Interesting...

Not a defect, GM trucks and other vehicles have done this since 2007 I think. The key doesn't actually stay in the Start position, it returns to Run but the start signal is sent to the engine and it controls the starter motor by itself. I have gotten so used to just flicking the key over for starting my truck that I have to think twice about it when getting into my other vehicles...

Are you saying the key stays in the start position until running OR the key returns to run position but the truck continues to crank until it starts?

When you release the key it should spring return from 'start' to 'run'.

With these trucks, the key sends a start command to the ECM. ECM manages the start -- signal to run starter. decision when to fire injectors and spark.

If you key returns and the start function continues, it's working correctly.

I turn the key to start and let go. It stays in the start position until the engine starts (maybe only a second or two) and then it returns to run by itself after the engine starts

So whats the problem here?
