Oil Change Recommendations

Recommended Posts

06 GMC Sierra. New to me, due for oil change.

Can I (should I) use synthetic oil? I used synthetic in my other cars just don't know history and or any issues with moving over to synthetic.

Advice or recommendations?

Use synthetic, Amsoil 5w-30 with a Wix filter and your good for 15K miles. Or if you still can't convince yourself of a once a year oil change then change every 6 months. You will never look back. I Change my vehicles in June and December....

Synthetic is fine. Get yourself some Pennzoil Platinum.

I disagree with this statement, it depends on how many miles the vehicle has using conventional oil.

I thought that it was an old wives tale that you couldn't switch to synthetic oil if the engine had a lot of miles on it?

I've switched over three vehicles from regular oil to synthetic with no issues. A 98 Grand Prix GT with over 120k miles, a 94 Z28 with 99k miles, and my current truck with 232k miles on the original engine.

Use any name brand oil synthetic or dino and you'll be fine, Often you can get synthetic on sale as cheaply as dino oil, especially after a rebate. Use a quality filter also. If you want extended drain intervals, past 5k or so, suggest you have an oil sample tested to see what might be recommended for your rig.

Pennzoil

Mobil1

Amsoil

Quaker State

Royal Purple

The very old vehicles and some newer ones have larger clearances which synthetic oil can escape the motor or into certain areas. This is one of the issues with switching to synthetic. Also there is the oil pressure. It's lighter so your oil pressure might drop to a lower range causing issues and might need to adjust the Weight.

Heck, split the difference and get the best of both worlds with a syn blend. Just about the best value going. I have gotten solid on the blends now for most everything I put motor oil in. And while base oils mean something to some degree, the differences between synthetics and conventional have narrowed over the last several years. The additive package that makes up 20-25% of any motor oil is more critical nowadays than worrying about synthetic vs conventional. Get a brand you like and can rest well at night with, and look for sales and rebate offers.
