Automotive Spelling Rant...

I, too, get very tired of misspellings and malapropisms. Some of my personal dislikes are:

"breaks" vs. "brakes"

"your" vs. "you're"

"Heads-Up display" (it is a trade-name "Head-Up"),

"it's" vs. "it",

"Me and my girlfriend", which should almost always be "My girlfriend and I",

"I seen", which should be "I saw"

"hone-in" which should be "home-in"

"possum" which should be "opussum" or " 'possum" (except for the Australian possum)

However, languages tend to be dynamic, and change over time. What is incorrect today will become acceptable in a fews years due to habitual usage. The is no "c" in the word "negotiate", however most of our local newscasters pronounce it "negociate" out of habit. Many years ago, people started using "impact" in place of "effect" and now it is used synonymously. If you read books and papers written a hundred or so years ago, the grammar and vocabulary are noticeably different, and in most cases, more clear and concise.

Of particular annoyance on forums such as this, are the long run-on sentences without punctuation, and the lack of capitalization, which matter to some people but not to everyone. A lot of people feel that as long as they get their ideas across, then it is close enough. It seems that in most cases, it is. I am not perfect, myself, so I tend to keep quiet and let it slide, but the more we let things slide, the more "lexicon drift" we get and the more our language degenerates. (A hundred years ago, no one would have used the expression "let it slide".)

I work with a lot of civil service employees, although I am not one of them. A good many of them are retired Navy personnel. You would not believe how often I see the word "Navey".

I LOVE THIS THREAD

Yep bad language permeates our society more and more, and I agree with the posters who said that texting has worsened it. I echo some of the sentiments...breaks vs. brakes, Cadillac vs catalytic converter, surge versus serge tank, on and on an on
