Automotive Spelling Rant...

Recommended Posts

You know what really grinds my gears? Spellings of names/phrases for packages/options/engines/vehicles. Its not hard...

There is no "H" in Vortec, Vortec Max, Ecotec, Ecotec3...no "G" in Cummins...no "E" in Camaro...no "CADILLAC" in CATALYTIC Converter...

Oh...and another thing that really irritates...

The phrase "our trucks"...as if the community is speaking when one person is talking about A truck or A type/brand/model of truck. "Are they using the 8L90 in our trucks?" No. Its "Are they using the 8L90 in the Silverado/Sierra?" Or... "What transmission do we have in our trucks?" No. Its "What transmission do I have in my truck?" Or "What transmissions are offered in the Silverado/Sierra?"

Just a rant...wasn't sure where to write it so I went with the "off topic" section...Any other rants from others? Please add them!

I hear you loud and clear.

I belong to a few forums and the abuse of the English language or the poor structure of it is the norm.

IMO it's the new way that started with texting.

Yep. I guess its a you spell it how it sounds kind of thing? Tech...vortech...what's the difference?

I work for Cummins, and I can't tell you how many times I've had to correct people when they try to email me something. They also think we are the tool company.

LOL.

Not just auto spelling but names and pronunciation too. If you are going to cover autos or be an enthusiast use the terms correctly. Examples:

  • Porsche is pronounced "porsh-a" not "porsh".
  • A BMW car or suv is a "Bimmer". "Beemer" is actually the name for a BMW motorcycle (I have friends who have owned BMW cars for a long time and still get this wrong). This is actual BMW history and you can find the whole reason of how the names came about on their enthusiast sites.
  • As mentioned above it's "Cummins" not "Cummings" (do the people who actually own these even look at the logos on the side of the truck?).
  • What is the GMC "Arcadia" (sounds like a place to play video games)??

And don't even get me started on grammar/spelling ...

"teachers" teach facts in order that the student can maybe pass the test to get more government money for the school. Teachers taught we older ones how to learn and it still works for us today. There were no batteries in our education.

Remove the "gadgets" and today's youth would be doomed to their own ignorance.

"Be" is still not a verb.
