has anyone sanded and buffed their new truck? I am in the market and cannot stand how poor the paint looks on these new 50k trucks. I had all the equipment to wet sand and buff paint at my dads house, but living 5 hours away makes it hard to do now.. so, my questions are: did the factory put down a decent depth of clear and what do you think shops are charging these days to wet sand/buff/then 2nd stage buff to remove swirl marks? or do you think just the 2 stage buffing would be enough to take care of the orange peel on these trucks? like i said earlier, i don't know how much clear was laid down and i would HATE to get into the base coat..

every black or blue gmc or chevy i have looked at has horrible orange peel. the last two dealerships i went to, i could see it from 20 feet away. i dont know if it was just the angle, but once you got closer, you could really see it. and i have a classic car background, so i am used to seeing proper paint jobs. orange peel.. it just kills me!

I think most if not all new cars have orange peel. It was bad enough on my 11 CTS V that I considered paying someone to wetsand it but decided it wasn't worth the cost.

 

From what I have been told it is from everyone switching to water base paints. I had my truck detailed and they didn't wetsand they did clay bar in then buff it

Head on over to Corvetteforum and see all the complaints about orange peel. I have a '16 Corvette and its true, terrible orange peel, supposedly from the composite panel prep..

My '15 Silverado paint has some orange peel, havent seen a any new car without it to some degree. But the truck has nicer paint then the Vette.

I would not wet sand to correct orange peel on any new car or truck, they use as little paint as possible due to cost, especially a large truck. If the paint in the bed is any indication there certainly isnt a whole lot of paint on the truck.

Somebody at GM called me right after I got a new 2007 Silverado and said he wanted to ask me a few questions about the quality of my new truck. I told him how shitty the paint job was and he told me that they allow a certain amount of orange peel on all new vehicles to cover the flaws in the sheet metal. He said the metal was so thin that the flaws, whatever they are" would show through a slick paint job.

I know on the GMT900'S there are waves in the sheet metal above the wheel wells in the bedsides, and on the hood just above the grille. It really shows up on darker colors.

The new trucks still do. Near the door handles front and rear wheel arches, near the body lines in the bed. The lower edge of the tail gate will give you motion sickness if the run your hand over it. Nobody build a straight truck anymore. I believe they can't with the thinner materials.

The last trip i made to The dealer was a sunny day and i couldnt believe The level of orange peel on them. The side of a truck is as big as a barn. I dont know how you werent able to see it..

 

Ive claybared a few vehicles, mainly just to get tar that my wheels threw up off The sides.. how well did that and buffing do to remove (some, most, all) of the peel?

Yep, I've seen it on them while walking through the lot. I've only noticed it above the wheels though myself, but I didn't look very hard anywhere else. It seems these days you pay for a fancy interior, nice wheels, and a quiet/smooth ride. The exterior goes by the wayside.

I completely agree! I mean, with those felt lined wheel wells, tail gate that wont slam down (whatever their name for it is..), heated/cooled seats, and wireless charging (and the last I checked all new phones need a 2A charger to charge while streaming music, not 1A that they put in the truck). With all that, who need a quality paint job
