6.2 l six speed vs 6.2 l 8 speed. Towing differences?

Recommended Posts

I never towed with the 6 speed and the 6.2l, but I towed a 9600 pound trailer with both the 8 speed with max tow, and one without. The one with max tow towed it really well. So 3-5000 lbs with max tow would pull it like a breeze. The 3.23 8 speed didn't handle it well with cooling. I have a max tow 6.2l coming in a few weeks.

That being said I've towed a 4500 lb trailer numerous times with my 5.3l with a 6 speed and 3.42, and it tows it decently but not near as good as it would with max tow.

8 speed vs 6speed - they also change the rear end ratio.

The overall effect is that low gear is lower and high gear is higher.

8 speed as more shifts available so it has more choices to select the optimum rpm to match power/torque to the load/grad being pulled.

Both the 5.3 and 6.2 Denali now get the 8 speed.

If you want the max tow ratio and the tow mirrors you'll need to get an SLT as max tow is not available in a denali.

Thinking of getting the new Denali with 8 sped tranny. Any thoughts on how it tows compared to the 6 speed tranny. I usually tow 3-5000 lbs.

With that weight, you won't notice a difference either way. With the 6.2, you need to be towing a pretty heavy load up very steep hills before there's a big difference; with a 5.3 the 8 speed becomes a bigger advantage with more moderate loads.
