Clunking shift 2-3

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a intermittent "hang" when shifting from 1-2 and what sounds like a driveline "clunk" from 2-3rd. It is a very noticeable clunk but both of these issues only occur at low speed driving. Never at wot.

I was thinking maybe a shift solenoid? Its a 07 Sierra 5.3 with 3.73 gears.

Sounds like what my previous 2006 would do. I bought it brand new and it always sounded like that and never got worse. Me personally I think it's normal operation but that's just my opinion. If it really sounds bad you may want to have it looked at by a pro just to confirm.

Honestly, I picked the truck up recently because of the shape it was in and the price was excellent. It has 140k on it so I am expecting some issues. Even if I needed to do a tranny in it, I would still be into it for under trade in value. I just figured it was worth the ask if it ended up being something simple I can check into.

Your the second person who has told me that its pretty normal though. My buddy had a 02 Silverado that did the same for 100k miles and for all those miles, he swore it would fail someday. His brother has it now with over 205k original everything.

Thanks for the feedback!

The notorious 2-3, 3-2 clunk has been and always will be present in my 03 Yukon with the 4L60E. About 8 months ago, I took it to GM to have the pressure control solenoid replaced ($400 waste). I figured I'd live with it until all hell broke loose. Well, hell broke loose and the trans went out on the freeway at 70mph. I mean, it had 239k on the original trans. Long story short, I had the trans rebuilt ($2k on the dot), drove it out of the shop and all was great until 150 miles later, the f****** clunk is back in 2-3, 3-2. I've read and read and read for hours in all forums trying to figure it out and I still can't!

I don't tow anything with this rig, just a daily commuter car (lol), but honestly I'm pretty damn sure the clunk did not contribute to the trans' death. The shop that rebuilt it said that most parts inside were just worn out, which makes sense for that mileage. Anyways, my point is, if you have the Bose system, crank it up and get used to the clunk (it hurts less when you can't hear it) or dump it for a Ford. The new model Hoe's and Yukons still have the issue as evident in my buddies 09 Hoe with 60k miles.
