L86 Headers and cat-back vs stock exhaust

Recommended Posts

I had my headers and no cats running through a Mbrp muffler for about three days before my neighbor(older guy) came over and had "the talk". Lol

Luckily I already had my spintech and aeroturbine waiting in the garage to show him. Haha I got up at the butt crack of dawn the next morning and went and had them installed. I'm sure he was cussing me

I have had 2 talks in about 4 days haha. Other neighbor is local PD and told me that while it was loud and very much annoying the neighbors. Their is no sound ordinance in the city so i was free to do as i please. I do ease out of the neighborhood but cold starts are very...... VERY loud.

How did you set up your exhaust? Im going to do a large magnaflow and a resonator and see where that gets me.

My exhaust is 1 7/8 kooks with ory of course then into a Mbrp 3.5 catback

I hacked about two feet of it then welded the aeroturbine directly to the spintech and it barely fit but all good now no cackle and a lot quieter but still every bit as angry.

Txjose, I was running a Magnaflow 15318 catback for a few months until I installed headers with cats. Don't think anyone would say anything about the noise level but it was too much for my taste. Very deep tone. With headers, it sounds just like it did with the stock manifolds and cats, but the volume is about double. No bark but more of a deep rumble. This system includes a 22 inch Magnaflow 3 1/2 inch muffler and a 4 inch tailpipe with a 4 inch resonator. This system might fit your needs.

Ill look into that. I didnt realize the catbacks had resonators. Most likely i will keep the volant tubing since its stainless and 3" and just replace the muffler and install the resonator as well.... By resonator i mean a bullet race muffler.

I installed my headers yesterday and you all would be surprised how loud the stock exhaust no resonator is with non catted headers. Cold idle is loud but after warmed up the idle is almost stock but hit the pedal and it barks pretty damn loud.

If it's anything like the older trucks they will definitely make it bark. With the stock exhaust on mine it made the tone a lot deeper, then when I changed mufflers it got real loud lol!

Tell me about it. I thought my Volant catback was quiet and it would wake up with the headers and you heard what i got haha.

I trashed my stock exhaust system but like i said ill report back tomorrow after my re do... Haha

At part heavy throttle it pops like as if i had a straight pipe so that is what bothers me the most.

I don't know if this will work or not but it's a short idle clip of the Mbrp catback ory and 1 7/8 kooks. I'll get some of the new setup soon

Not even close to mine hahaha..... Warm yah maybe... But for a 6.2 thats pretty tame.

Mine are also 1 7/8" but ARH catless

It wasn't too bad but very raspy. Not really what I was looking for. Here is a clip part throttle from the inside.

When it dries up here I'll get some of the new mufflers

I love the sound of headers with the stock cat-back. Not for everyone but they idle deep and have zero drone. I have LT headers on my 05 with everything stock (including cats) all the way back. Pulls quite, no exhaust smell when hooking trailers, etc. Should make around 450whp at 8 psi on a TVS1900

Just re did mine with a 22" magnaflow and it is VERY quiet. Almost stock but you know something is up trype of deal.

I didn't end up needing the resonator as it doesn't pop. It drones like SOB but thats ok as my tires also make a lot of dam noise.

Honesty this is what i should have done in the beginning not spend all that money on the catback. But on tje plus side i got full stainless steel 3" tubing out of it.

From what i have driven it so far i miss the loudness of the volant muffler but i am going with a stealth approach to performance. You know not all loud and you know it has something but the oh something is definitely up with that truck but you cant quite put your finger on it.

We will see... If anything ill step it down to an 18"er but i doubt it... Especially after the cam upgrade.
