1972 dream project

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about doing something like this for a long time now.  I think I have the perfect project truck.  Something that will turn heads and be different.  I am a big fan of the 72 body style, especially the view from the front.  What I was thinking about doing was taking a regular cab and making it into an extended cab, using a short bed and making something that never existed but still retaining the classic body lines and interior, except for upgraded seats.  For the drive line I was thinking about corporate 12 bolts front and rear, 350 - 4 bolt mains, after market fuel injection, and maybe a NV 4500 5 sp., mild lift and 33-12.50's.  My aim is to take one of the best body styles ever offered and bring it up to 2003 standards or as close as possible.  What do you guys think?  Can it be done?  Anybody did something like this before?

At one time I had a 72 Super Cheyenne, 72 Sub w/ diual air and the barn doors, and a 72 Jimmy. These vehicles are easy to work with. All f mine were restores to factory specs, no mods were done. If your good with metal work the extra cb could be done using 2 entire cabs. You might need to find a LWB and use a SWB bed to give room for the cab extension. I would stick to the 2 whl drive and leave the 4 wheel drive alone. What would look cool would be a factory stock looking truck with the extra cab. A huge v-8 and instead of chrome aftermarket wheels use a set of 8" steel wheels forma Cadillac, there are the only ones that came in that width, paint the wheels a factory white and find the original SS center caps. Any one can do mods but to keep somthing original with an extreme mod built in that dosen't look extreme, now thats a show stopper.

I think anything can be done as long as you have the $$$$ to make it happen! Sounds like a good project! :withstupid:

I have not done a project yet but I think my 1st will have to be restoring a Vette 70's model - Love that body style!

Go pick up this months issue of Classic Trucks. It has a blue one in it that this has been done to. Looks good, but I didn't have time to read it so I don't know anymore. So it can be done just requires some time and money. Like was already said.

I just read the same article. It is alot of work. I think the guy owned a body shop. What he did was buy another cab, same year and and an extra set of door skins and graft it all on to the body to get all the lines correct. I can't recall where he got the windows. One thing for sure it will take some extensive welding and a darn good body man. :lurk: I believe the easiest way and maybe the way he did it was to take a longbed truck and frame and put a short bed on it and fill the rest with the made ext. cab. But you have to do some work on the frame or bed also to get the wheelwells to line up. Good luck!! :withstupid::cheers:
