Looking for portable air compressor to keep in truck...recommendations

Recommended Posts

I finally got a toolbox and got a fair amount of goodies in it already, but one thing I've always wanted to keep in my truck but never been able to is a portable air compressor. There has been so many occasions where one would've come in handy, but never had a toolbox to keep one in. What do you guys have or recommend?

Are you looking for an electric job that plugs in to your 12v outlet and hides under the seat for filling tires and such, or an actual air compressor with a tank?

Well I've been thinking about it and I'm on the fence. That's essentially my reasoning behind creating this thread so I can see what everyone else is using and what they think. I don't really think I need a compressor with a tank. When it comes time to use it, I will just plug it into the truck and get it going. I guess the only down side I see with that is if I am in a spot where the compressor will not reach the wheels on the trailer or something a tank would come in handy. I will not be mounting it to the truck either. It will just be something that I can keep in my toolbox and take it out when needed.

At this point, I'm not really opposed to anything. Just want to get an idea of what anyone else is using.

Train horn kit with an extra port for connecting an air hose? That's what I have and you can't see it, it hides on top of the skid plate

What you intend to do with the compressor will affect what type compressor you would need. If it is to occasionally air up a tire you can get by with a smaller compressor with a shorter duty-cycle. However, if you want to use it to air up all four tires after 4-wheeling or run an impact gun you will need a more powerful compressor and an air tank.

If you can expand on your needs we can make a few suggestions. We have a number of options. Permanently mounting a compressor and tank in your tool box is a great idea.

I have this one and really like it. We take it on trips to fill the kids air matresses up and it has worked great

I pick this a few months ago and it's good to go for adding a few lbs to tires and odd little jobs. It comes with a few nozel adaptors and needles. And it has a standard 12v plug and lighter plug as well. Its small and light. I'd recommend it for sure, good luck!

We keep a Viair 70p my wife's car: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012WHBSO

I have a Viair 88p in the truck: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ASY23I

What i like about these is that they have threaded tips, so you just connect it to the valve and it holds itself in place securely while you cycle the compressor on and off. I find that the built in gauges aren't very accurate (I've never actually witnessed a built in gauge of any brand that's accurate while filling), but they're consistent enough that you can figure out when to stop with a little experimenting. Overfill slightly, disconnect, then check your handheld gauge and purge until you hit the right pressure.

The 70p plugs into the cigarette lighter, but the 88p has alligator clamps to connect to the battery terminal. Going directly to the battery is necessary because of the higher amp draw on the 88p.

The 70p comes with a case, but I had to buy my own case for the 88p.

I also bought an extender for the filler nozzle to give me a little extra reach: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ELJD0BW
