New 2015 HD delivered with crooked rear axle

Recommended Posts

I picked up a brand new 2015 Sierra 2500 SLT All Terrain Crew Cab in November and within a week noticed the truck Dog Tracking. Local dealers did not want to touch it so I was forced to drive 2 hours to the selling dealer to have it looked at. When following the truck you can see the drivers side of the truck and a good portion of the front wheel. The drivers side rear wheel is about 1/2 inch more forward than the passengers rear wheel. Additionally, the passenger side rear wheel sticks out from under the fender a bit. So the axle seems shifted to the right.

The dealer claims nothing is wrong. I asked for the alignment sheet and he faxed me the attached. I don't know the specs on thrust angle but do know it is far out of the preferred setting. Any help or advice will be appreciated. I am worried that GMC is not going to correct this.post-152796-0-76422800-1452459569_thumb.jpeg

Thanks!

Update. Dealer discovered both rear tires have a chunk of rubber torn from them. They are replacing the tires and believe the alignment as posted earlier id acceptable. I requested that they remove the U bolts and center pins from the rear leaf packs to inspect for damage and shift. And perform another alignment of course. Any other thoughts are welcomed.

Ok, just got an update. GM completed their analysis, this is cut from the email they sent

"we have completed the analysis of your vehicles alignment, suspention, tires and wheel base. Everything reguarding all of these was found to be well within factory Specs."

Any alignment techs out there agree? Look at the report on the 1st page. I guess I will be picking it up Saturday and bringing it to a private shop to have GM's shotty work corrected at my expense. I'll be sure to post the outcome.

Good grief to have to go thru that i feel for you, do you have a pic of it crabbing down the road maybe show them a short video from behind while your driving.

I asked the service manager if he followed it and he said he did and that he did not notice anything? Again, look at the thrust measurement in the alignment report. I'll post a video before I have it corrected for all to see what is acceptable to GM. This is only one spec in tolerance, I have to wonder where else they allow for such variance.

I will contact GM tomorrow and see if this is all they are willing to do. I can't get back to the dealer for another 3 days anyway, we'll see if anything changes by then.

Thanks for your input and concern.

Wade, I asked that they open the leaf packs and check if the center pins were not cracked or bent. I must assume that was part of there analysis. I'm ok with bringing it to an alignment and suspension pro anyway. Even if they did work on in I'd have to have it inspected by someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks for this info, that can make it appear worse. I still believe it has a shift in the axle. Look again at the rear toe, left +.26 deg. and right -.15 deg. thrust is at the extreme right on the report with the measurement unreadable from the fax they sent me. I'd hate to keep it at that extreme upper limit. Do you think it will be unsafe or burning up tires? especially towing over 10klbs of a fifth wheel trailer?

Maybe some of what you are seeing is because the front axle is wider than the rear. 68.7" front 67.6" rear.

It's not unreadable, it just doesn't have a numerical measurement associated with it. If it was so extreme it couldn't be read, it would be all the way to the far right or left with an x instead of an arrow. Your measurement is still in the green. Those steps are varying degrees. The tallest step left or right is out of spec, middle is 'good' and within spec and the lowest is near 0, or whatever the target spec may be

Adamrg, I think it is numeric values in a dark color on a dark color step block so the fax scanner made it all black and therefore unreadable on the copy I have. I don't have the original multi color report.

Could be, you can change a bunch of different settings on the print report, but what I'm used to seeing is green block if reading is in spec, red block if it's out, and white numbers regardless of in or out of Spec. Regardless of not seeing a number, the block illustration shows the reading is in spec. It may be able to be tweaked to make it slightly better, not sure how much they would work with you on that.

I'm not disagreeing that you may or may not have a problem, but rather giving you some insight as to how to read that sheet. As far as I can tell, The reading is in spec, and not extreme one way or the other.
