We hit our Canadian cold of minus 30 now steering feels tight

Recommended Posts

After we hit our - 30 cold my truck steering while driving feels very stiff. Is this normal I don't recall this from last year It hasn't done that before I'm curious if the cold is the reason for it. And from what I feel turning right feels stiffer. Wanna ask before I call the dealer tomorrow when they open

Yea....unfortunately, when the temps get that cold the EPS system gets harder to turn. Not sure why, but there is nothing wrong. Its "normal". It's probably something to do with the type of lubricant they used in the gear box. It's not well suited for cold temps. No way to change it out either.

Last year and the year before when we got into the -20's and -30's my steering got tight too.

Will it loosen up as the truck warms up?

Alright so shouldn't be something I should worry about. I'm in Manitoba Canada and I was like something seems funny... At least I don't need to go see the dealer I'm sure they are tired of seeing me haha

What is funny is my 14 Z71 gets stiff...

But my 15 2500HD work truck doesn't...... Do they have different systems?

Your 2500hd uses a traditional hydraulic steering system. With a steering box, pitman and idler arm, it has a power steering fluid.

The 1500's use an electric assist rack and pinion system. No power steering fluid.

You are correct, very different systems.

This has nothing to do with steering

But how do yall deal with that kind of cold weather. I'm from central Texas and it's cold tonight, some times I think about moving were it doesn't get cold. The hotter the better lol
