Getting Equipped for Paint Correction/Maintenance

Recommended Posts

I've been putting off getting equipped for paint correction/maintenance. I've had the usual bucket, sponge, selection of local parts store waxes and an old rotary buffer which probably would do more damage in my hands than help, if I ever did use it.

I went to a local supplier of detailing supplies called Chemical Guys. Their store in Gardena CA is not too far out of my way.

First, I wanted a good orbital DA buffer. I spoke with Nick and he recommended the Torq brand. He recommended a model with a 8mm oscillation. I inquired about other better options and their advantages/disadvantages. We settled on a Torq 22D with a 21mm oscillation which will make quicker work of any task. I bought a kit of pads and backers and compounds. Saved quite a bit that way. http://www.chemicalguys.com/TORQ22D_Random_Orbital_Polisher_Kit_9_items_p/buf502x.htm

I also wanted to "clay" using a power tool. Nick recommended a new pad that is silicone and really doesn't use real clay. There are 3 levels of aggressiveness. I chose medium and fine. You use them with a lubricant and the DA buffer. Seems pretty slick. I hate hand claying a car. http://www.chemicalguys.com/Clay_Eraser_Disc_Blue_Fine_6_inch_p/cly_512.htm

Nick put me onto their "V" series of compounds and polishes. He said a 2 step of V38 and V36 should get me where I want to go with the truck and would leave it swirl free. http://www.chemicalguys.com/V36_Cutting_Polish_V38_Final_Polish_16_oz_p/gap_vkit_101.htm

Next we talked sealant. He recommended their "Jet Seal"

In addition to the above, I piled up a large assortment of microfiber towels and wash mitts, drying cloths detailing brushes, tire brush, A foam gun kit, a few bucket "Grit Guards".

In the end, it was a big dent in a G-note.

I'm looking forward to getting the paint on the 2014 truck in good shape. I've neglected it for nearly 2 years, only washing it.

I have never clayed, I just polish. It sounds like you went with something in between the two for first step. Let us know how it works out. I probably should get a rotary tool, polishing and waxing by hand does take a while. I use sealant rather than real wax as well, it seems to last much longer.
