Anybody used Safelite to replace a windshield?

Recommended Posts

Well, title is pretty self explanatory. Got a nice split in my windshield and am looking to replace. I know safelite comes to you and can replace on the spot, but has anybody used them before? Do you recommend/not recommend? I have yet to get a quote, but I'll call them this afternoon as well as the dealership and compare the two.

Those of you that have had it done, should I remove my inspection stickers/toll tag before they do the replacement or are they able to salvage the stickers?

For what its worth, I'm located in Houston.

Thanks

IMHO, get either the dealer or a glass shop to install the same make of glass that came in the truck...PPG, LOF, etc. Safelite put in one glass for the Mrs several years ago..awful wind noise at 65mph plus, leaked water, totally botched the job.

I had safe lite repair my winsheild on my previous truck and they did a good job they even came to my work and removed everything and cleanup can't complain however the glass wasn't oem (strength) I tell u that now but if your on a budget, don't travel on highway speeds, and don't tailgate the glass they use should be fine. My quote was around 150$ at the time so should give u an idea.

I called and got a quote. They quoted me $380+tax/install for their windshield. OEM through safelite was $899. I also called my dealership and they use a local glass company. Called them and they quoted me $220 or so. Asked if it was OEM glass and was told its DOT approved, same standards as OEM, but not OEM. Sounded pretty cheap to me. I ended up just going the safelite route. I like the fact that they are all over the US, so say I have a problem with the install or need a fix, they should be anywhere that I am. They are coming out tomorrow sometime so I'll look over it as they are doing it to see if I can notice any differences.

Gotten a few windshields from Safelite. It's what my insurance uses so if it's not done right, insurance would have to pay for any future repairs. However, all of mine have been good minus my last truck. After a few years, the top seam started leaking. I figured the heck with it and just ran a bead of silicone across the top of the seam and never leaked again.

Didn't see anyone answer this part of your question-they cut out my stickers (2 in PA) and left them on the glass and I carried them in the vehicle until the dealership put new ones on for me. Tech said they were not permitted to try to remove them, damaging them was against the law. Well anyway that's what he said.

But I cant say I had any problems with either the service or the quality. I don't remember the cost but it was a couple hundred bucks soups to nuts after insurance deductible.

BTW, sure seems to be a lot of cracked windshields on these trucks, surprised the dealerships aren't capitalizing on this repair market ($$).

I bought my truck used. It has a safe lite windshield installed in it. The only problem I have with it is it doesn't have the tinted part near the top. Other than that I'm fine with it. I had the whole window tinted 50% top to bottom and then a 20% eye band across the top. Perfect.

Call your agent to check the deductible on your auto insurance policy for glass breakage. You should only have the deductible for out of pocket expenses.

Had Safelite do a windshield in my old '87 Firebird and they did a great job. Probably better than the factory install job, and it was done in the parking lot at work. To be honest though, that car was WAY noisier inside than my '14 Sierra, so if the glass was thin enough to allow more noise I don't know if I'd have heard it.
