Hill descent control

Recommended Posts

It actually says Hill Start Assist Active, or at least it should lol. I get it at the only stop light on my way to work every morning

Yes you are correct. That's what it says. I knew it was something like that. lol

Hill Descent Control is a separate switch on the center stack. Z71 only, at least for the 2014. I've used mine several times, works great for the most part. Does anyone know if there is a distance it's supposed be used for? Mine turned itself off on a steep hill.

that's what makes me wonder my rally 2 package dose not have it, but my father in laws truck has it (i think its a z71 but idk) and he has to hit the switch for it to work I think. so could this be a builtin safety feature, kinda like a lesser preforming version of the HDC, if that makes sense?

You guys are talking about 3 separate systems.

Grade Braking - It assists in maintaining desired vehicle speeds when driving on downhill grades by using the engine and transmission to slow the vehicle. The first time the system engages for each ignition key cycle, a DIC message will be displayed. This is the one that can be felt kicking in when at highway speed

(grade braking is automatic, but it does NOT work with the trans in range selection (manual) mode)
Hill Start Assist - HSA works when stopped on a grade to prevent rollback when while you move your foot from the brake to the accelerator. Works in forward and reverse. It may also activate trailer brakes.
Hill Descent Control - This feature only available on Z71 trucks. It is switch activated. It only works between 2 and 14 mph. It shuts off completely if the vehicle goes above 37mph.

that's what makes me think its HDC because grade breaking is speed sensitive, example on mine it wont kick in under like 15mph. now when I was going down the hill in 4 low at idk 1-2mph the truck needed very little input from me to maintain that speed, when I got to the bottom and taped the gas it felt like the breaks were released and the truck lunged foreword. I find it odd that grade breaking would work wile the engine is at idle and truck speed is under 5mph.

Rally 2 is not available with Z71 (which HDC is Z71 only). Where you in Manual mode in like 1st gear? Or was the truck in D? Tow/Haul on or off?

Hill Descent Control is not an "automatic" system. It is Z71 only, and is activated via a toggle switch in the center stack bank (to the right of the cargo lamp switch).

What you may have experienced is Powertrain Grade Braking

I have it on mine and it’s just 2016 1500 LT.

The grade braking on my 2019 Silverado LD (6 speed 5.3) is not as violent, for lack of better words, as it was in my last truck. It's actually hardly noticeable. My last truck was a 2016 Colorado 6 speed 3.6 V-6 and when you went down a very steep hill and tapped the brakes, it would downshift so much that it was almost scary. The RPMs would rise so high, the engine would scream. Maybe the Silverado has more sound deadening or the V-8 is not as loud as the Colorado's V-6...IDK....
