Red radiator fluid vs green

Recommended Posts

We all know that the red stuff will not last like they say.  I had a Malibu that the stuff was shot at 80,000 miles. In my rodding days  I ran the old green stuff for many years with aluminum heads and aluminum radiators. No problems. Does anybody know if there would be a problem with running the green stuff my 6.o,  And do a yearly fush like in the old days? The only thing I see is the new motors runs about 210.My old motors ran about 185 -190.

Or should I just flush and put fresh red back?

I just do not trust all this high mileage maint. stuff. Like the plugs going 100,000. Have not seen this to be true.

I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not but I never really researched it.  For what it cost I'm just going to flush it out every 50k. I feel that will do just fine and it makes me feel better.   :thumb:

Hey Black, you deal with Amsoil. I am considering it in my tranny. Not sure if this has a converter drain plug. If it don't do you think it will mix OK with the GM factory stuff? Any drawbacks with it in a L485?

How much would you you think a bypass filter kit would help me on moisture in my oil? I seen some that uses a toliet paper roll. That is not how the Amsoil kit is? Does it effect oil PSI.

Is there a external filter kit for the tranny?

If you plan on going from Red to Green, you better hope that when you flush, you get all of the red out. I have heard several instances of systems getting gummed up due to mixing the 2 different types.

I have heard that also but have went from green to red to green to red to green, well you get the point. Hasnt caused a problem yet but this has been in a '91 K1500 not a newer vehicle!

Mag,

Amsoil ATF will work fine. There are no compatibility problems at all. The best way is to flush the system if you want the full benefit of the synthetic.  You can do that yourself if you want by disconnecting the tranny cooler return line. All you do is drain your pan, pull it down and clean it out, replace the filter, install the pan, fill up with four quarts. With the return line disconnected and a hose on the end to make things easier. Start the engine and while your down watching the return fluid, you have some one up top to pour ATF fluid in. Not sure on the amount your system takes. My 4L60E takes 16 qts. You can tell when it has been flushed by the color of the fluid coming out of the return line or by the amount of the fluid you pour in.

The other way is to do a normal pan and fliter drain, run about 5k miles and then do another. After about three times then it should be mostly the new fluid.

The bypass system will help keep out the moisture from normal build up on short trips but nothing in extreme amounts. Amsoils bypass uses a stacked disc filter system and they will filter a 5 qt system in 15 miles of driving at 45 mph. It is a gradual task because it is filtering down to 1 micron.

It will not effect the oil psi. It can be hooked up several ways and in line with your normal filter.  You can even hook it up so that an adapter goes on your old oil fiter mount and then you run lines and a remote filter assembly to a mounting place of your choice and install your regular oil filter and bypass filter on that adapter. Or you can just keep your stock filter in it's current location and mount a remote bypass up to the engine using the oil pressure port. The added benefit to using a remote bypass system is that when you trade you can take it off and put it on the new vehicle.

Amsoil dosen't have a filter kit for the tranny, they just have one for the engine.

Hopefully I answered your questions. If you have anymore feel free to call me. You can get all my information off my web site. Just click on my link on the left side of the screen.  you can even order from there if you like. Amsoil has a preferred customer program. It is like joining Sam's club or Cosco's, It cost $20 a year and you get a 20% discount, basically everything at wholesale prices. You make up that $20 if you order $90 or more so that qt of ATF goes from $7.80 a qt to $5.90 qt :thumb:

Just remembered, I will be out of town starting Sunday to the 14th. My daughter is having surgery in St. Louis at the childrens hospital so we will be there.

Hey Black, Nothing is going to happen that quick on the bypass, my biggie now is the tranny. You all know how I do my oil, not sure if a bypass would really do me any good.

I know about surgery on a child. My daughter has had 3 at childrens  in Cincinnati and 1 other at a regular hospital. The first was at 8 weeks old. Scary stuff for a daddy. Man my very best wishes goes out to her and you. I will put black02silverado  and child in my nightly prayer tonight. I am not a religion freak but I do say a nightly prayer before I crash.  Kids are my soft spot. As mean as I may sound I love kids much more than anything in the world. Going to give mine a kiss right now. As I hold back a tear.

By the way I hear the 2 best children hospitals are Cincy and ST. Louie. I am sure your daughter is in the best hands that you can get. God Bless buddy.

Thanks mag,

I have twin 6yr old girls that were born 3 months premature. Spent the better part of 79 first days of their life in the NICU till we got to bring them home, on monitors to boot. Conner is fine, she only had to have surgery on her heart the day after she was born, (she weighed in at 1lb 6oz and my wedding band went all the way up to her shoulder)

Hunter, who is having the surgery, has CP (cerebral palsy) The surgery is a long word that I can't spell and is suppose to help her to walk. Right now she can walk some in a walker but not much without help. St.Louis hospital is the place that perfected the surgery and has a 100% success rate. Hunter has been through a lot and not thrilled about this one when I learned of the pain factor, but if it will allow her to walk then it is worth it. I understand the prayer part, I do the same.

So come Sunday I will be gone for 10 days. My wife and I appreciate everything.

Thanks again

My cousin had spine surgery to relax the spasms in her nerves and improve her chances to walk too.  She also has cp.  I think it's dorsal rysotomy(It's got to be close).

Getting back to the original thread.  No worries man you can change out to the green fluid.  I did around 18k or so the radiator fluid was started to curdel in the overflow so I decided to forget the Dex Cool.  I flushed the red out and went back in with the green and some water wetter.  Now the truck sits around 190-200 versus the factory 210.
